Test Your Firewall

I switched my Internet Security Suite on one of my computers from Trend Micro to Kaspersky. I ran a port scanner from the link provided below and found that every port is being stealthed. I do have this computer connecting though a router so the router will affect the test.

Out of curiosity, I am going to connect my computer directly to a LAN and run this test again later and see how well Kaspersky is blocking my ports. I am interested in finding out straight from you how well your firewall is doing its job too as it would be interesting to hear straight from everyone who wants to participate how well the free firewalls are doing compared to the premium ones.:)

I just did a port scan using the same on mine with Windows firewall and showed Stealth on all ports. Guess I will leave well enough alone. :D

hi !

which is the big problem with most firewalls.

Actually, doesn't the Windows Firewall in Windows 7 block outgoing as well? Pretty sure I read somewhere it does.

Regardless, I don't let programs on my system that I don't trust for outgoing connections and I have Avast plus Prevx to ensure that programs I don't know about, don't get installed.

"allows you to block outbound"

yes, you CAN block outgoing connections, but it requires a lot of manual configuration.
by default it doesn´t block.

but it doesn´t block OUTGOING connections

"Well, that's not what you said. You said it doesn't allow you to and it doesn't, but in fact it does."

no, where did you read that ?
read my post above again !

this is EXACTLY what i said: "yes, windows FW is stealth regarding INCOMING, but it doesn´t block OUTGOING connections,
which is the big problem with most firewalls."

who said that you can NOT block outgoing?

i said: "yes, you CAN block outgoing connections, but it requires a lot of manual configuration.
by default it doesn´t block"

"Oh and by the way, to properly quote a previous post, just hit the quote button."

why should i repeat a whole post when it´s enough to copy a few word as reference to what i´m replying to ?
there is a lot of unnecessary quoting in most threads...

and may i suggest that YOU read a post "properly" before you reply ?
please do NOT put words in my mouth...

finally someone who has a real clue. use zonealarm or kaspersky. if setup properly you will be asked on all new processes for both the internet and non internet zones. never use microsoft security software, including uac.

jay if you are only relying on you router don't. that is a mistake. you do need both a hardware and software firewall.

Thank you for your concern.
But don't worry about me.
I am one of those people in the forum who is very interested on IT security and experiment with all kinds of setup and betas.. ;)

Of course I am not relaying only on hardware firewall.

My point was that if you are behind the router those kinds of tests are pointless as it will more likely stealth all ports, not allowing those tests scan your ports... :)
another example: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2 (scanned system's first 1056 ports, results: full stealth with only firewall router)

Guess we agree to disagree because you clearly stated Windows Firewall does NOT block outgoing and in fact it does.

And, I would have less problems reading your posts if they weren't such a mess and you quoted properly as I pointed out. Not to mention proper grammar and punctuation.

hi!

TheIgster: "Guess we agree to disagree"

no, i don´t agree.

TheIgster: "because you clearly stated Windows Firewall does NOT block outgoing and in fact it does."

the fact is, it does NOT block outgoing connections (by DEFAULT).

i already explained this in my 4th post in this thread: "yes, you CAN block outgoing connections, but it requires a lot of manual configuration.
by default it doesn´t block. "

"Well, that's not what you said. You said it doesn't allow you to and it doesn't, but in fact it does"

i NEVER said that you CANNOT block outgoing connections.

is this too difficult to understand ?

once again, do NOT put words in my mouth !

"And, I would have less problems reading your posts if they weren't such a mess and you quoted properly as I pointed out. Not to mention proper grammar and punctuation. "

may i suggest you take a REALLY good look at your OWN posts, before you start complaining about how other people write....

now that you pretend to be a "language-cop", why don´t you understand what i posted above ?

in english there is a big difference between "does not" & "can not"...

anyway, good to see that you are now obviously running out of arguments, since you are now trying bad excuses for not reading and understanding my previous posts.

however, right now while i was checking my previous posts, i noticed a minor error, that "TheIgster:" fell off from the text while i was editing, i was both tired & upset when i posted them.
but it should be quite obvious to both YOU and anyone else reading the thread who i was replying to...

PLEASE TheIgster, do us all a favor & READ my posts above !

and PLEASE do NOT "put words in my mouth",
which means: do NOT accuse me of writing / saying / posting something i have not done !

the EVIDENCE is in my previous posts above, for those that can read...

hi !

IggyAZ: "These other guys are playing word symantics."

if you are referring to me & TheIgster, then you don´t understand the difference,
you posted a picture of blocking INCOMING connections, i said that W7 firewall doesn´t block OUTGOING connections.
IN & OUT are two different directions...

TheIgster is lying, putting words in my mouth, do you call that "playing word symantics" ?
