Ladies stockings or even Speaker cabinet mesh can be cheap and surprisingly effective in limiting dust.

I made some 'ghetto filters' for my case and while it didn't stop everything (nature of my case design), it certainly reduced the amount of dust getting in.

Nate,

For the client - I would fit fans and a filter, as this is the only available option, you could leave the fans un-powered, if them running would disturb your airflow scheme, you always have the option to power them up if global warming takes effect ;)

The dust and sand gets everywhere, and you don't want to know where that is.
