The driver detected a controller error

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could clarify this. I keep getting this error:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 Event ID 11.

It only seems to occur when I plug or save something to my USB stick, but not every time. I only have one HDD and disk management shows it to be Disk0, and when the USB is plugged it is denoted Disk1.

In device manager it says my HDD is Location 0 (Channel 1). Does this mean the error refers to my actual hard drive or the USB stick (i.e does it refer to the location or the channel).

I am assuming (and hoping) that it is the USB stick, but am unsure as to why it would be classed as a hard drive.

Thanks in advance

Guess it must be the USB stick as got exactly the same error in another computer when plugged it in. Event logs correlate to when using it too. Funny how it calls it a hard disk though.

I am having the same issue and I don't experience any freeze, boot or other problems but this error message in the event viewer just annoys me...I am not sure if it is related becuse I don't think we are using Ata 66 DMA because as far as I know that is the old standart and now we are using Ultra DMA 5 and our problem sems similar to that one the but what microsoft says:

If you are using DMA transfer mode with an ATA66 hard disk, you may receive the following error messages at startupd isk error driver detected a controller error on the device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1
ATAPI Error Parity error on device \IDE\IDEport1

CAUSEATA66 DMA transfer mode is not supported for the onboard IDE controller....

ATA66 DMA transfer mode is not supported for the onboard IDE controller.

To resolve this issue, change the transfer mode for the controller:
  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
  2. Double-click System Tools in the right pane, and then double-click Device Manager.
  3. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller in the right pane, and then double-click the appropriate controller.
  4. On the Advanced Settings tab, click PIO Only in the Transfer Mode box.
  5. Click OK, close the Computer Management window, and then reboot the computer.

And what I also experience....

I'm having the same (initial) issue and I do have an HP computer.

Is there specific information about why I'd be getting this error on my 500 GB Personal Media drive?

You really should start your own thread. You will get more support and faster.

Ken BTW check the link in my post back in the beginning of this thread

Thanks for replying, Ken. I'll start a new thread.

BTW, the link in your post at the beginning is (now) to a dead page on HP's site. The info that apparently used to be there is what I'm needing.
