Hi,
I own a Dell latitude D820 laptop. It had been left on, and I noticed the screen was black so rebooted it. When it came back online I was no longer able to use the keyboard or built in touch pad. I was however able to use a wireless USB mouse and keyboard so I can use the laptop and get online with it. I checked device manager and it shows several items with errors including the DVD drive so I cannot reinstall windows. The error for each item is “The driver for this device might be corrupted, or your system may be running low on memory or other resources. (Code 3)”
It doesn’t even see the DVD drive in my computer. I did a little bit of research and found a site that suggested I am missing an important file called wdf01000. I did try and do a system restore, but the only restore point available was from midnight the night before and it didn’t fix the problem.
As a last resort I might attempt to locate an external USB DVD drive, but I’m hoping to not go in that direction if possible.
Running Windows 7 32 bit version.
Thanks!
Chuck

Hi,
Thanks for the link. I did as the doc suggested and when it was done it came back with "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." I rebooted and it came back with the same errors in the device manager. I tried uninstalling them and rebooted again. They all came back with the same errors, so no fix yet.

Try running it again. It may take several passes to repair some faults. Don't arbitrarily remove or delete anything unless you have a specific reason to do so. You may compound the problem to an extent that it may be necessary to re-install or repair your OS. Do you have an Anti-virus loaded and running? Is it up to date? Is your Windows OS up to date?

Hi,

I read the article, but my problem is that my DVD drive has been affected as well so it won't recognize the media. Is it possible to use the media in another PC and create a book disk on a USB drive?

Hi Roderunner,

Thanks for the great article. I did do everything mentioned including moving win 7 to the USB drive. I also changed compatibility to Win Vista with svc pack 2. It soon came up with the error that I can't upgrade Win 7 pro to win 7 pro and asked me to do a fresh install. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

before I go any further, make a copy of all your files and folders in C: drive. Then make sure you can reinstall any paid programs.
Is your C: drive all one or does it have partitions.

No, it originally came with win xp pro. I currently have win 7 32 bit installed. I've been using win 7 on this laptop for over a year now and it's worked flawlessly. This is the first time it's had any issues. Looking at Microsoft Security Essentials log, I noticed several trogan horses that were being quarantined from right before the computer started having issues. I'm wondering if that isn't somehow related to this new problem.
