The Gimp abandons SourceForge due to installer wrapper

I found out about this a couple of days ago, when I discovered that GIMP 2.8.8 was available.
I downloaded 2.8.6 just barely two months ago from GIMP's site and didn't have any issue ?
I'll have to see about 2.8.8 though ;)

Just for posterity from an old geek who downloaded his first free software from Tucows about 20 years ago: The name is an acronym of The Ultimate Collection Of Windows Software.

Hi there
I always wondered what that site had to do with Cattle (Cows) - however I agree - still one of the best.

Vote with your feet against sites deliberately confusing the user into downloading totally different software to what they wanted, and COMPLAIN LOUDLY to the owners of sites having the "Forced Video" trick - those where you are required to watch a video before you can proceed to the download, next link or whatever.

In the real world stuff has to be PAID FOR so a certain amount of advertising is inevitable - but it should be done in a decent and unobtrusive manner - as Kari says the W7 Forum is a good example of that or the "National Rail" FREE app from the UK for mobile phones -- small barely noticeable advertisement and the application does clearly and decently exactly what it says. (Anybody who has ever tried to navigate through the UK Rail system will appreciate this one - especially if you live in Europe a lot of time where you don't have loads of different rail companies operating trains even on the SAME lines and it's CHEAPER to buy a ticket for two pieces of the SAME journey than pay for ONE ticket t your final destination -- Go figure -- I did London ==>Birmingham, Birmingham to Manchester -- cost 11 + 9 = 20 GBP whereas instead if I wanted ONE ticket ON THE SAME TRAIN !! London==>Manchester = 43 GBP !!!).

Nobody should be bamboozeled into downloading stuff by mistake or deliberate obfuscation on the part of the Site owners.

If you don't need the full Photoshop program then the GIMP is an EXCELLENT FREE alternative and works on Linux too -- I'd support the developers of this software if you can and I'm sure their brave move in resisting "invasionware" will be universally applauded. Let's hope others follow.

Cheers
jimbo

While that would be as annoying as an itch on the bottom of your foot while wearing lace-up boots, at least it would be a onetime thing opposed to having garbage accompanying the download.
