It's finally going to happen! The same folks who made The Lord Of The Rings are making The Hobbit!

Worse than that the world will end before "Rocky X" is released. :shock:

I remember playing the Hobbit game on my Commodore 64 back in the mid 80s. For the time, it had quite a sophisticated text recognition algorithm that the developers named Inglish.

If they follow the book as they did with "Lord of the Rings" it should be good.

All they need to do is remain true to Tolkien's vision. They had to make some concessions with Lord Of The Rings, or they would have been forced to make 6 movies. The one glaring omision was the fulfilment of the prophecy that Frodo saw in the Lady Galadriels pool. Near the end of the book, as Frodo, Samwise, Merry and Pippin are retuning to Hobbiton, they discover that Saruman is alive, and attempting to have his vengeance on the hobbits by destroying their world.

Of the entire story, this is the one plot line that should not have been removed from the movies.


The Hobbit is far shorter than LOTR, and it would appear that the film is going to be a multi-parter. Whether it will be 2 or 3 parts is unknown, but this much is clear: by splitting it into more than one movie, it seems as though Peter Jackson wants to tell as much of the story as possible.

Does the pending release of The Hobbit also raise our hopes of seeing The Silmarillion? It would seem as though tye are releasing the movies in the same order that the books were originally published...

It was about 15 years between the reading of the books and the last movie and I had totally forgot about this.

It has been 20 years since reading the Hobbit. Maybe I need to dust off my old copy before the movie comes out.

Silmarillion. I don't know if I read it or not.

I didn't read any Tolkien until I was in my late 20-30's. Robert Ludlum also.
Go figure the combo of Tolkien and Ludlum.

In high school/college 1972-80 I was into Kurt Vonnegut and Herman Hesse.

So a re read of the Hobbit is in order and evidently a read of the Silmarillion.

I actually have the Rankin Bass toons, The Return of the King and The Hobbit. Still like to watch them once in a while

The Silmarillion contains the whole quasi- christian mythos which underlies the LOTR. It contains a creation myth, the fall of the Lucifer equivalent (of whom Sauron is only an emissary) and the trick played on all the races when the rings of power were created.
I think it's a great book but I cannot imagine filming it. It would certainly offend some people. Also it is really a linguistic theological excercise. Whilst there are some battles and action, the theology would make for a very dry movie.
Tolkien was a member of a literary group called "The Inklings" who's stated aim was to promote christianity through their writings.
C.S Lewis was also a member of the group and I would recommend his science fiction trilogy-Out of The Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. This includes an Adam and Eve plus the serpent scene and, if my memory serves, Satan and Jesus wrestling on a rocket. It is a much more overtly proselytizing work than LOTR and a great read.
Often quoted is C.S Lewis remark "not another ****ing elf" when Tolkien read some of his latest writings at the group.

Peter Jackson is now out of the hospital and ready to head back to the Misty Mountains.

The Oscar-winning director was admitted a week ago to a New Zealand hospital after complaining he had some stomach pains and wound up needing emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer. His rep says the filmmaker is on the mend at his Wellington home.

So what's happening with The Hobbit, set to start fiming this month?
