So the aim is to play mkv files with WMP.
I know all about vlc, used it on XP.
Checking into some of the codec packs available. I am aware of the Shark pack, but unless I'm mistaken I would need to install the 7 pack and the x64 ontop of it. So I stumble accrost this cccp-project.net, seriously is that supposta be some kind of something new from Moscow joke?

Sorry I'm a child of the cold war.

It's not something new. This codec pack was around there for a some time already.
That's just it's developers had some sense of humour so they named it CCCP.
I have used it on Vusta to play mkv files.

I don't use it know, so I am not sure about it's compatibility with Window 7...

What Operating Systems are supported?
  • Windows 7, Vista, XP and 2000 are fully supported. The pack works on all mentioned 32-bit as well as 64-bit Windows versions. 64-bit players, however, aren't currently supported.
  • Windows 98 and ME are not supported anymore. You can still use the 2007-02-22 pack, but it's quite ancient now.
  • Mac OS X is not supported since UNIX-based OS's do not support DirectShow. We recommend that you use MPlayer OSX Extended. If you want to use the Quicktime player to play your files, support for some common formats is provided by Perian.
  • Linux and BSD are not supported for their lack of DirectShow. Again, use of MPlayer is advised. Build your own MPlayer from svn, distribution packages are often outdated and crippled.

Thanx Jav; I actually installed the latest Shark pack (32) and mkv's play fine with WMP on x64. Used suggested settings.
