The media is write protected.

when trying to transfer a file from laptop to desktop external drive. i get the message that the media is write protected, this seems odd as i write to it quite often,
when i access the laptop via the homegroup and copy and paste to the external, it copies fine ,so i am perplexed as to how to remove the write protection ,ive had a look in security in the properties on the external but they look fine and all the permissions seem to be set correctly. any ideas.
its a real pain as the most space is on the external and i want to empty up the laptop

Data link cable, e.g. USB cable? By saying it's a desktop external drive, you just mean you usually use it as an external drive on your desktop? So, you're just simply connecting this external drive to your laptop via USB and trying to transfer a file to it?

no the laptop to pc using file transfer cable via the cable's software to the external that is constantly plugged into the desktop.

ok the files are on the laptop, the external is plugged into the desktop.
using a data transfer cable from lappy to the desktop with the target folder on the external. which tells me its write protected when i try to move a folder to it,
as a workaround i am moving folders from lappy to my user folder on the desktop ,then i will move them to the ezternal, its just that its a pain transfering the data twice instead of it going to the external in the first place.
i suppose an easier way would be to plug the external into the lappy and move them that way. its just that the way my set up is i dont wanrt to mess about moving drives etc.

Ok, but what is your "data transfer cable"? That could mean anything, but it's not USB as I've suggested. So, what is it? And, what is the "cable's software" you are using?

and the driver software that came with it. it allows the computers to see each other, and drag and drop the files for transferring

thanks jaycee, yes i have taken ownership of the whole drive and actually cocked up the permissions on the external, ive spent most of the day putting things back to normal with the file settings ,
now on a load of my folders i have padlocks which is a wind up, but at least i have access to the folders and files. prior to that nothing would open, i still have a few that wont open and i willl have a mess around tomorrow re setting them.

Ok, it sounds like it's an error through the software, then, not through Windows itself. If so, it's most likely because that technology grants you sharing capabilities between the two machines, but that doesn't account for the separate security relationship between the desktop machine and the external drive.

You could try adding the username you use on your laptop to the list of users with full control on the external drive.

Yea, you don't want to take ownership in this scenario. That is just going to create other sharing issues.

good idea, i will also try put a file on one of my other externals and see if it says that is write protected also .

problem is i was able to navigate to the external from the laptop and set it as the target ,and it started for a few seconds then stopped saying it was protected.

will try and get it to work tomorrow. like i say as a workaround i moved the folders from the lappy to the desktop and then i moved them from the desktop to the external. bit of a faff but i have got an extra 64 GB back on the laptop now at least.
