I'm about to re-install my OS. I have got myself a license through my company that offers both x86 and x64.

I have never tried running x64 on my main OS before, and therefore I come here to ask:

Should I pick x64 over x86?

My specs:
Core 2 Duo 2667 Mhz @ 3.1Ghz
4 GB of 800Mhz Dual Channel memory.
8800 GT 512MB
ASUS Maximus II Formula.

I mainly use this PC for gaming (Newer games but also some older ones), MS Office, web browsing and some tinkering with VMware.

I'm pretty sure I can drivers for everything I would need, and even if I can't get the right sound drivers I know from tinkering with VM that windows drivers works like a charm.

What do you think I should do?

Hi HikerRemastered,

As you have 4GB RAM I would suggest you go for the 64bit - just check that the drivers are available.

Basically I would suggest that if possible, anyone running > 3.5gb go 64 bit :D

Hello HikerRemastered,

The Windows 7 RC version should be released in a few weeks if you wanted to wait for it instead. Other than that, it's only available in the torrents.

Hope this helps,

Personally, I'd go with x86 as unless you have over 4GB of RAM it actually SLOWS down your computer...

I agree with everyone about 64-bit, go for it; but it'll like 8GB of RAM better if the mobo will handle it, DDR2 is way cheap right now.

If you MUST have a 32 bit OS for some older apps you say you already have vmware so you can run the 32 bit OS under it.

I'm still using XP Pro for a "Minidisc" application that only runs on XP -- Sony won't supply any VISTA / W7 upgrade for it. This works just fine on XP under VMWARE.

Sometimes on Music gigs live recordings / demos I need a Minidisc recorder. Ipods just don't hack it for Live Recording of Uncompressed Music I'm afraid.

Also listening to very highly compressed MP3 music with hideous bud earphones isn't my way of enjoying music.

Minidisc might be "Dinosaur technology" but the quality can't be beaten --especially with a nice pair of BOSE Noise cancelling cans and you can still record in uncompressed WAV.

As for TV cards -- Hauppage is actively "Beta-ing" WINTV7 which works (a little) on X-64 W7. Works OK in VISTA X-64. Pinnacle also is developing stuff.

Most cards seem to work OK anyway with Windows Media Center (both w7 X-86 and X-64).

Cheers
jimbo
