There is a great scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail where workers go through the village to collect dead bodies. One supposedly dead man is tossed in the wagon when he protests, "I'm not dead yet!" If you have seen Spamalot on Broadway, you may also remember the catchy song titled "He Is Not Dead Yet" in the opening of the show. Well, that little diddy comes to mind every time I sit down at my laptop.

Despite the growth of mobile computing categories, the classic PC will never die.

The pc isn't dead. I still would rather watch videos and do heavy typing on my pc rather than my tablet. Everyhting else, though, I can do on my tablet.

Nor will it die anytime soon. There is a multi-billion dollar industry supplying components to people like me who rolls their own and OEMs as well.
Remember the PDA? That was like a tablet.

PCs will never go, the same was probably thought, when laptops were first produced (desktops would disappear). I still prefer a desktop any day over a notebook/laptop - greater power - and also tablets are just so limited by the power of their components and speed of tasks in which a standard PC could accomplish.

Pc won't die anytime soon and guess what? Pc has been making more money then the ps3 lately,coming in 2nd with the most sales according to EA sale stats.

I believe between pc gamers and the enthusiast is what's keeping the pc alive since they will buy all the new tech stuff and pc gamers will buy pc games and stuff like graphic cards,cpus,mobos ect... and such which will keep companies like intel, amd,nvdia and microsoft in business.

First what is a PC ?
I like my large screen, keyboard, mouse, tablet and other user I/O interfaces that I can use sitting at a desk on a decent chair.

BUT I remember when the first Mac was introduced - that little box thing with a small screen and that "windows" environment which was surely designed for the technically challenged. I was sure this type of thing would fizzle out!

PC=Personal Computer, a term coined by IBM way back when they first sold a "home" computer with a tower and monitor. then every one got into the game and they referred to them as IBM clones.

I actually knew PC stood for Personal Computer and I bought one of the IBM XT clones as my first PC a long time ago.
I meant was what do we now mean as "Personal Computing" now and in the future.

I question if there will be some true unification or accept a hardware split to accommodate different purposes.
I'll also put out there the question - Is the current technology direction actually dumbing down our children?

Gotcha Michael. As for the children being dumbed down, yes. You can see them struggle with a simple thing like figuring a 10% discount, and they don't read well nor much. Too many alternate reality game universes to be involved in for real life.

If cloud computing every becomes the norm, I wonder if most computers users will simply plug their handheld devices into a large computer screen at home.

Already seeing laptops dumbing down & becoming Tablets with keyboards. Apple & Samsung latest slimline no longer have user battery or memory upgradeable parts, add the decline of expresscard slots means most new laptops have a 2yr shelf life.

Most laptops except for the top of the line ones and tablets and things like that will get cheeper because of compatition. Ofcourse they will be made cheeper. They will become like a Bic lighter. It quiet working, throw it away and get another one. Cell phones do all kinds of computing, email, pictures, surfing on line. When was the last time anybody had one repaired. Take it back or throw it away and get another one.

By dumbing down I don't mean the technology itself but rather the user.
I see the school system (here) letting kids down in the core fundamentals that don't change irrespective of what new gadget becomes available.
eg.
Times table -> arithmetic -> broader mathematics
spelling -> grammar / sentence construction -> expression
science -> how do you work, how does the fancy gadget work

I need to add that technology can facilitate the dumbing down process. Just because a kid knows the buttons to press it can hide their fundamental weaknesses.

When a desktop, laptop and tablet are all within reach I will always sit down at the desktop. Probably because of all the intense typing going on. But I'd use it to do a shopping or restaurant search, too. It's the size of the screen, more than anything. I like to be able to settle back instead of lean forward. It's enough of an obsession I'll use a 24 inch monitor and make the type huge.

When they make a tablet with a full size keyboard, a 22" or larger monitor and/or multiple monitors, 4-8GB RAM, an optical drive, a decent sound card, and enough disk space to store all my books, mp3s, videos, etc., I might consider one.

I'm not sure where Personal Computing is headed. But I know one thing. It's inevitable that the first generation of users who have the hardware jacked directly into their heads and wifi directly to the cloud, are going to be totally pissed when the next interface has an extra connection that can't be circumvented by an adapter. "Just had that damn neurosurgery 6 months ago and already I have to go back for re-grooving !"

At one point i think the desktop might die out. As technology gets better and better we can in the end make smaller components witch is allot more power full than today`s PC and we will sit with laptop in the end.
If i could buy a laptop with more power than i could get from a high end desktop PC cheaper, i would with no doubt buy the laptop.
I'm speaking as a gamer tho.
As i see it a laptop is better in every way than a desktop. Easy to move and not that hard to change components (might be a bit harder than a desktop for inexperienced users)

But tablets and smaller gadgets will never take over the PC.

as a gamer dont u like to play games on a big screen? or have teamspeak and other usefull stuff on a second large screen?
a laptop could never replace a desktop for me

Just got my first gaming desktop last year, and before that i have been playing on laptops. And im only using 1 screen now while im playing my desktop. Dosnt bother me having to "alt-tab" to get out of the game and surf the net or do what ever. and playing on a little bit smaller screen dosnt bother me either.
And dosnt laptop have team speak?

i was the same. i bought a laptop for gaming which had a 17ich screen but i enjoy the games more a bigger screen. everyone to their own i suppose enit
