Have you reformated the affected system after the virus has been detected?

Hi James,
As you've not said what the malware was.

See youve got Avast run a boot time scan.

Then D/L run malwarebytes free.

Post the results of both.

Roy

Thanks anyway. Waaay more involved than just running avast. Besides this PC2 has the avast and the troubled PC1 does not. Ur time is appreciated. Closing thread. Jim

Doesn't make a blind bit of difference.

D/L Avast and Malwarebytes and post the results.

No point in asking for help if your gonna ignore it.

Reformatting means to delete all the data and operating system from the computer and install it from scratch again, effectively starting with a fresh system without any software or data. While it's somewhat complicated and tedious, it's also warranted to get rid of every infection in the system. A previous backup of the data will ensure you don't lose anything important.
It's also known as a "clean install" or, as security experts often call it, "nuke it from orbit".

This is the ONLY way to ensure a clean system once it has been infected with a malware of any kind. Not nice, but quite effective.

You mention you've restored a backup. This isn't a sure move to clean a compromised system. The fundamental problem is that you don't know if the backup was also infected at the time it was taken.
