The time has come (update opinions)

I'm tired of the core of my system, and it seems the mobo (the second one of the same model) died this afternoon.
I am faced with replacing the same old motherboard with yet another one that will fail completely within 2 years (if the previous two are any indication)

So I'm looking to update
Power Supply
Motherboard
CPU
RAM

I will continue using my current case (plenty of room it's a full tower), graphics, monitor, hard drives, and periphs for the moment

Anyhow I was looking at something like this,

Have to keep the price tag under 800, but I do want performance parts.
My problem is I'm not so sure on the motherboard, for one thing I currently have an ati graphics card, so tri-sli may not be so realistic.
It doesn't have to be intel either.
I'm more interested in raw performance/least issues than I am with brand loyalty.
A crossfire motherboard option is also fine, as a second ati card may be coming.
Any specific suggestions are welcome.
If you can include a new case keeping the price in check all the better.

Looks like a good setup to me except I would use Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 which is 8GB, but 2x4GB. That way you'll only use one memory controller and should run faster. Although I'm and AMD man, I'd stay with Intel for the CPU at this time.

In order to future proof it to an extent, I would consider some of the newer model motherboards coming out with pcie 3.0, which rumor has it will be the next generation of cards. I may also consider the HX serise of Corsair PSU's. Modular is great.

yeah my current psu is modular.
This time around it's just maximum bang for buck.
I'm still wondering if someone can present a amd based system to challenge it.
Like I said crossfire would be more useful to me than sli too.

Im looking at a very similar build myself. Same board in fact.

looks to be a great board but ...
If you do not care about the ECP Panel & Gauge, you can save a bit going with the other P67FTW. They are identical other than those 2 toys and $20 difference.


If you have no plans on a Crossfire/SLI config, you could just go with a 650 or 750 at most PSU.
Would be a bit cheaper, and far more power than youll need ... unless of course you want the Crossfire/SLI option later, then the 850 would ceratinly be the better choice.

I too would say just get 2x4GB of RAM rather than 4x2.
Personally, Id choose Gskill Rips over the Corsair RAM, but thats just a personal opinion.

I've had so many problems with installing os when more than 2gigs are installed, which was the thinking behind that
I initially had considered 16gig and no replacement psu. (current 1 is 1000 watt but has many, many, many operational hours on it.)

I'll tell you one thing having to use this old fx-60 rig during the meantime is going to kill me....
Waiting for windows to open up is so 8 years ago.

A G Skill tech rep said that 2X4GB is better than 4X2GB because it is easier on the system and will run better. I am running 2X4GB Ripjaws x @1866 1.5V with no problems. It also allows you to go to 16GB a lot cheaper.

Looks count too. Plus they are low profile and most coolers will fit over them.

I have a set of that RAM, very solid even on my AMD board. Paired with a 2x2GB set for 12GBs total. GSkill support is really, well, supportive too.

it's also significantly less expensive. Maybe enough so for me to sneak a ssd into the order.

now keep in mind with that setup I have the money left over for either a decent ssd or even a fair model case.
I know it's not quite as much kick as the i7.
I'm upgrading from a first gen core duo if you check my specs though, so either is going to be noticeable.
I'm just trying to do the best I can on the set amount of funds I've allotted myself for this.

50 dollars under budget.
Pretty sure it's going this way as I don't walk away with a good ssd in the intel deal.
can probably knock a little bit more shopping around, but I'll get free shipping anyhow.

there are actually other motherboard options but I have to have 6 sata's.
May drop down to a 64gig ssd and get a freeagent. Tired of my 'so called' portable drive.

Looks like a real nice mess of parts.
The SSD shows some good 4K IOPS. The Sequential read/write stuff is to impress buyers and have little to do with how you use a PC.

Been hearing lots of good stuff about them.

CPU:
Also, if you would rather build Intel, remember the 2500k.
Its $100 cheaper than the 2600K and only lacks Hyperthreading, and 2MB of Cache.
From everything Ive seen, theres approx. a 10% difference in performance.


PSU:
I was looking around new egg for a PSU myself, and stumbled upon this:

The x750 was on sale, for the same price, but it ended this morning.

Not that the Corsair is a bad choice, but at this price point that Seasonic might possibly be a better choice between the two, given its Gold rated as well as modular.
Depends on your needs and expectations I suppose.


Just some things to consider before you make a final decision.

You certainly have many good options available for a good build.

Yeah I'll have a little time to fine tune the order.
Instead of ordering right away I'm going to wait until end of November and catch holiday sales and have a bit more to spend.

...unless I just cave because I get sick of having this older computer as my primary right now.
