Why not? Windows has been taking a downturn lately- months straight of unreliable, faulty updates that seem to harm or even brick too many PCs. A new OS that turned out to be a useless joke, and system security that's more vulnerable than ever. Windows only stays on top because of gaming, while the military probably wants something a bit less unreliable and something they can code and later as they need on the fly.

This is what I noticed from the article.
Wanted and need highly trained sailors but computer wizards not needed.

The CDS workstation uses common USB interfaces for its peripheral devices (such as trackballs and specialized button panels) and is equipped with touchscreens, as well, so that watch standers have a choice between "classic" and touch interfaces.

Raytheon team has had sailors in to perform usability assessments from before code was even written, showing them screen shots of interfaces to get feedback from users. "We had a chief that said, 'We don't want any 'wizards,'" said Froncillo

3.5 billion is sure a lot of money for one ship but considering
the amount of R & D for the first one over that period of time maybe not.

I think someone will be looking for the su command and trying to find who has root password while the incoming missiles are approaching !!! -- or they will have updated the wrong distro.

Actually Military systems and procurements are still based on 19th and 20th cent warfare -- you don't need massive ships / loads of aircraft or even huge numbers of "Boots on the Ground" for 21st century type conflicts -- remember one solitary individual with a tiny deadly nano microphage could probably devastate half of the United States (and the rest of the world too).

Artificial Viruses / nano technology probably represent (or could) represent far more danger to the planet than even the most hostile Chinese / Russian regime -- and is the USA going to invade them -- no way --in fact even small countries like Syria and Iran won't be swamped by "Boots on the Ground" so what on earth does the US DO with that size military in the 21st century -- much better to spend the money on say establishing Human colonies on Mars / Moon etc.

You got to do something with all those tax dollars. People on Mars probably wouldn't pay taxes so that boat don't float.

Through the short life of the U.S.A we have been told by some countries we don't need all that military until one of those countries needs help. Then we have just enough or not enough military.

Me being a veteran who has spent time in a war I must say sometimes I do wonder why and where we use our military.

Here is a war that the U.S.A was a the major player to save the murder and rape of millions of people. I don't remember any body saying thank you.For all those countries that helped I say thank you. For those counties that didn't help; Why not.

What about the poor old Brits too -- at one time they had most of the planet under its control - on the whole the legacy left wasn't all total disaster -- established a reasonable system of administration and probably a fairer system of justice than anything else would have delivered at the time -- seems apart from Singapore and "The old Commonwealth" a lot of other countries have actually gone BACKWARDS since independence too - notably hideous corrupt regimes in Africa etc.

However one has to argue that in a lot of cases did military intervention ever seriously work -- sometimes the end result is far worse than what you were trying to achieve in the first place - namely IRAQ as a starter which should be a salutary reminder that you can't solve everything by sheer military might.

Actually if Planet Earth were ever to be invaded by Extra Terrestials our salvation would probably arise in using incredibly LOW tech weaponary and small bands of guerrilla fighters - a high tech massive military would probably be overcome by the extra terrestials in about 10 mins flat.

The whole Military option needs to be re-thought out for TODAY's environment - not deployment of forces for LAST CENTURY's battles.

Drugs, Extreme religious intolerance, some severe overpopulation, equitable division of scarce resources and bad management of environmental resources are what should be occupying the minds of the current generation of politicians.
