hello,
I have upgraded vista to win 7 home premium, everything was going great, until the network card stopped working, i used talktalk "talk and go" to reset the adaptor then the computer re-set and shut down.
i restarted but it wouldn't get to the log on page before shutting down.
I borrowed a laptop and found a thread to turn back the clock to vista with some command prompts, but this didn't work.
To compound things i then saw open in previous good something and the log on screen appeared - i thought YES, but NO..... typed in my password......"The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loeaded". it appears that i have deleted my account...
i have looked at other threads of this nature and have been directed to a vista tutorial - however it staes that you must be logged on as an administrator - i can't log on!
i've tried opening the command prompt and turing on the in built administrator, but i have to restart to get back to log on page which defeats the command prompt.
i have tried to re-install win7 but comp tells me i have started with disk in restart then insert disk. this does nothing...

i'm really really fed up at the mo i thought that win 7 would be better than this.....

any help to solve this would be great. thanks

Have you enabled "Boot from CD" in your BIOS?

for some reason Bios is blank.......just a flashing white cursor on a black screen in the top left hand side....

however a friend managed to get the system to re-install BUT only with custom, luckily i did a back up....

user profile service service failed

I have a very clean windows 7 system and hit this error yesterday... I was able to recover using a restore point.

I can't find anything on the web on the cause or if MS is going to address this... I hit this bug after I did a windows critical update two days ago. Has anyone figured this out?

I am just about ready to get a mac.

i had this same problem last night and its due to a microsoft update that needs patching go to system restore and restore your system to before you installed the update

User profile corrupt

Come guys this too easy, go to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
User\ProfileList\ and was able to find the key for my user id SID. Rename the bak to .bk, then rename the identically one to .bak, then remove the old one that you named to .bk, by just deleting the .bk extension and on the old one then change the State property under my key to 0.

Do you have an option to change user? Look around on the login screen for something that says "Other Credentials"

Try logging in with the username "Administrator" and leave the password field blank.

no, i've only got one user profile set up and it is the administrator profile. that's the one that seems to have been corrupted/deleted by the recent windows update.

Hey guys,
Heres another one...

Fresh install of Win7Ent,
Created a second admin account via compmgmt.msc
Logged out, logged into new admin account.
Customised it a bit by changing backgound, and startmenu taskbar settings.
Logged out, logged into master admin account.
Went to make coffee.
Copied second admin account to default user via System Properties>User Profiles.
Joined Domain successfuly.
Rebooted.
Tried to log in with domain account, and got the error message.

Any ideas? Cheers in advnace.

ps, just started a job as the imaging guy, so I may start being around this forums for a while...

had a similar problem on a quite new win7 machine, fortunatly not on the admin account, and system restore to a few days ago fixed it.

I've read all the posts, but we can't get past the user name and password. Interesting is that whenever we type what we know is the correct password, we get The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded". If we type an incorrect password we get a message telling us that we typed an incorrect password. So we know we're using the correct password.

I thought we'd try safe mode then system restore, but we can't get to safe mode either. I press the F8 button on restart, but it just sends us to the same starting point. We have no way of entering the system. Much of the advice here tells us to hit the start button, but we don't have a "start" button on the bottom left.

How can we get to the system restore. We have a username on the screen and a password box. The only other clickable item is a restart button.

Still a problem

Any answer to the message from Makov? I have just the same problem - ie I get the error message after entering the correct password for the one and only account but no apparent way of selecting any of the options suggested in previous answers - just shut-down option to click.

For the record, I have not found a fix. By pressing power-on and hitting F8 I got a menu of possible fixes. Tried "system restore" (unspecified error), "repair" (no problems found), "system image retsore" (no image). In the end I ran "Restore Dell factory settings" which returned the laptop to its original state. I had to log in again as a first time user and rerun selected downloads from the internet (Java etc). Luckily the laptop is new and had no significant data files. Now I'll just carry on & hope the problem never occurs again.

Okay, so I'd gotten some detailed help on another site and the information was easy-peezy-lemon-squeezy to follow. . . if you know what you're doing.

I have the same problem with logging in into the administrator account (and the only way I seem able to do so is if I am in Safe Mode). I know it's not that my profile has been deleted, or anything. . . I didn't use a CD or upgrade from a Vista. I bought my computer as a Windows 7 and it's worked fine until a few days ago. I still can't log in (I'm using my Guest account).

So I restarted my comp (hitting F8 until a menu-like screen came up) then I chose Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I successfully logged in and the Command Prompt came up (I'm guessing, since it was the only box on the screen). I was told to type in: net user administrator password /active: yes.

And I was told it was supposed to say "Command Completed Successfully" then I type "shutdown -r" to boot up again, then press F8 again then choose Safe Mode. . . Well, I couldn't get passed typing in "net user administrator password /active: yes"

I typed it in excatly like that and nothing like "Command Completed Successfuly" popped up. I'm not sure if I have to type in password or my actual password to log on with. :/ And I've tried both, but still nothing happens. How should I type the command in exactly, because I'm that hopeless. XD

If there is another administrator account that you can log into, then jump to step 7 after logging into that account.
However, if you can't get to any accounts at all, then start at step 1.


1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there. If it still doesn't work, then go to step17
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3
7. Hit (windows logo)+R
8. Type regedit
9. Once the registry editor opens up, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
10. In the left pane, find the one that starts with S-1-5..... and ends with .BAK; if you don't find one, skip to step 15
11. Right click it and click Rename, then change the .BAK to .BK
12. Right click the one with the same numbering but without the .BAK and add .BAK add the end
13. Right click the one that you renamed to .BK and clickRename, delete the .BK
14. Eventually, you have switched the .BAK from the end of the second entry to the first. That should probably fix your problem.
15. If you didn't find a .BAK then try this: Open Windows Explorer to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data
16. If you find another Application Data below the one you're on, then delete it. That should probably also fix your problem.
17. If you can't login in Safe Mode, then reboot and hit F8 until you see the menu again, then hit enter highlightingRepair Your Computer
18. Wait until all Windows Files finish loading, then hitNext when it asks keyboard language.
19. Try logging in here also, choose your user from the dropdown menu, and type the password, then jump to step 23
20. If that still doesn't work, then if you have your Windows Installation CD still, put it in and restart your computer.
21. Hit F12 until you see a menu of boot options, choose Boot from CD
22. Choose keyboard language then hit next. Find Repair Your Computer from a little below the center left.
23. Choose Open Command Prompt and type: net user administrator password /active:yes (here again you can specify a password)
24. Close the command prompt and click Restart and jump to step 5


To disable the administrator account, type this in an elevated command prompt: net user administrator /active:no


If nothing here helps, then I'm clueless on how to fix this next.

Thanks for this info. Since I've reloaded the factory system I'm up and running OK so won't be needing it (I hope) but I reckon the step by step instructions are a model of clarity for we dummies, so my compliments to the author.

i had this problem for my wifes laptop, running windows 7 64bit. For her what gets it corrupt in the first place is that she doest keep it plugged up and it shuts off. hard drive has suffered a bit from that. my issue involved not being able to pull up the advanced boot menu(holding/pressing f8) and it not getting to the login screen before restarting infinity.on that note maybe that issue is caused when you are the only account and dont have a password (windows just starts and logs in automatically)


the solution: hook hard drive up to a pc and run a checkdisk/scan. windows may even ask you if you want to scan it as soon as you hook it up as it did in my case. i opted not to at first and just opened up files to backup on my hard drive, then after all data was transferred i power cycled drive and then did the scan. replaced hard drive booted right up, am re-installing now
