Thinking about moving to Windows 7 64 bit

Hey everyone, since I bought my new RAM, I've been seriously considering upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit. I already have the 32 bit version installed and I know I can't do an upgrade install from that (nor would I want to ). I know my processor is capable of running it since it is a 64 bit processor (sorry if that's not the right terminology lol), but I'm most concerned about my hardware and drivers. How can I know if my current hardware I have installed will have 64 bit drivers to go along with them?

If you're using a 64-bit CPU, then I'd definitely consider upgrading. Especially if you've upgraded your RAM.

Ok, thanks guys. I downloaded the Upgrade Advisor, and it seems to me that everything should work out fine. Also, I haven't upgraded my RAM yet, I'm still waiting for it to arrive Hopefully it'll be here around Thursday or Friday.

Have a look at this tutorial at the link below; it's an excellent way to be able to take your time moving to the new install; though it says Vista, it works exactly the same for Windows 7 and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

You'll want to download the drivers and store them on a flash drive before starting the install anyway, so why not just check? Chances are, aside from old peripherals, the hardware will definitely have x64 drivers....but the only true way to know for sure is to go look for them.

Wow, it's been a while lol. Well, I've been without power for the past 6 days or so due to the storms that have moved through the area. We finally got internet last night. I've gotten my RAM and installed it already, but I won't install the x64 version of Windows 7 until we get power back, because we are currently running on a generator. I want to be able to plug my laptop into the wall while it's installing and not have to worry about the generator cutting off in the middle of installation.

You may be aware already but, your Key will activate the x64 since the keys are only tied to what type of Windows it is (Basic, Home Prem. etc) and is not specific to x86 or x64.

Just do a clean install of x64, and use your key to activate.

Ok, it's installed and everything is working nicely. I've gotten all the drivers I need installed and I'm working on getting all the current Windows Updates installed. So, everything went pretty smoothly. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Ok, I've gotten past the initial driver setup phase. Now I'm at the point where I'm reinstalling software. For one thing, I downloaded and installed Firefox 4. It tends to lock up quite a bit when I use it... I downloaded Nightly (Firefox 6 alpha) 64 bit version, and it runs like a charm. The only problem is that Flash is 32 bit, and as far as I'm aware, the 64 bit version "Square" is pretty old.

I've also had this problem installing Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (for Sony Vegas 8); it runs into something called Error 1935. I've Googled it, and that didn't seem to help much. Any tips here? Again, I greatly appreciate all the help from you guys.
