Ok, i know im suppost to learn more about computers and take the A+ Certification test and all but....I am feeling ridiculous when i am trying to get rid of the fake anti virus called "ThinkPoint Security". I tried almost everything and it is still there. I really don't know how to figure this out completely. I googled, youtubed and other sites. Went to safe mode, control alt del and disable hotfix.exe and run malware but nothing is being found but this...IS there something i am missing or not doing it correctly? PleASe let me know. This is like the 5th time my mom's pc got a rogue virus. And those were easy and all. But this all happend today. My mom logs in and pow, this pops up and ask for a scan. Only 2 options but one is greyed out. Normal Start up and Safe Startup. I control alt delete so i can bring up task manager to disable hotfix.exe. I was told to do that then run scan. nothing happens. And i wont give up just to wipe out everything. I know i can get rid of this, i just need to know more information if anyone got a run into this type of problem with the SAME NAME and got rid of it.

When you follow the manual removal instructions and after killing hotpoint.exe's running process you need to start explorer through task manager then do a manual search for hotpoint.exe and delete it.

Hotpoint.exe should reside at C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming and after deleting try another scan with Malwarebytes, updated first of course, to clean up any dregs.

There is another glut of new installers being released for this rogue.

I got rid of Thinkpoint on my mom's vista machine by booting from vista install disc and doing a system restore from 2 days earlier. Worked like a charm. Scanned afterwards with Malwarebytes and MSE - both found nothing.

Is she clicking on the same infected link or continuig to visit an infected website?

What anti-virus does she have that won't spot it from the beginning?

me n her both got Microsoft Security Essentials. I can't really blame the anti virus because i have it and i barely scan my laptop (i hardly ever) and i never and not once got infected with any virus. And i did noticed she has limewire (only because my dumb sister wants it but i deleted it) and i am guessing that maybe my mom was downloading something.

You take your chances downloading anything with Limewire, or any P2P programs.
Injecting malware code into shared files is all the rage now
