Third party software on a Win 7 32 disc?

My friend in the UK just installed Win 7 32 as a dual boot with XP.

He sent me an email decrying the fact that there was, "third party" software on the disc that he had to opt out of to complete the install.

I told him the only discs I ever saw that had crapware on it were from Dell or Gateway. When I pressed him for the names of the software he didn't have specific names for any of it. Understanding that he didn't have a pen and paper when he met up with this junk, I get that he didn't have names....

In all my years from Win 3.0 to present day and all versions in between, I have never seen anything other than the OS on a real MS disc.

Has anyone here encountered what he describes? It's a mystery to me is all I can say.

I will say that I am utterly dismayed by all the software that is laden with all sorts of 'bonus' items that install themselves if you aren't extremely careful to avoid them. CNET and Download.com seem to be the prime offenders. But that's software and not a complete OS.

You are right though, the only ones that usually do that are the branded OEM's.

Where did the disc come from?

They were Recovery disks then. Win7 Installation disks have nothing but the OS, and the Reinstallation disks from OEM's which are not Recovery DIsks only have some OEM branding for the Properties page and activation baked in.

Send him this link to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.
One doesn't need to depend upon any but the latest official Win7 ISO download.

I believe that he told me it came from a computer shop in a nearby village. I'll have to ask again and see what he offers me.

Bent copies of Windows from warez download sites, torrent etc often have a whole bunch of 3rd party apps slipstreamed into the iso - probably want their download to stand out from all the others. A disk that's been tampered with by an amateur ? A recipe for disaster IMHO.

Well I got my UK friend to send me scans of the disc and the packaging. It is all but identical to my Win 7 64 bit version.

I was expecting to see a brand name like Dell or Gateway on the disc but it's simply an OEM disc. What he's talking about I have no idea. Unless I was to install it myself to see what he mrans, it's a dead issue. He was able to activate it with no trouble.

See the attached .jpg it gives no clue as to why there'd be something other than the OS on it.

Very interesting stuff. Luckily I have never had the experience that apparently many others have, w/ counterfeit copies of MS OS's.

I know that so many things that look legit, really aren't. A simple thing like the oil filter for your cars engine has been copied. Yes it might say FRAM and be the same orange color, but when sawed in half, the guts of it, if there are any, surely are not what FRAM would want you to use.
