Hello,

Since a couple of weeks a get the message "this device can run faster" when I plug a external HD or USB stick in the USB ports of my laptop.
Its not only a warning, the transfer speed is also a lot slower as it used to be...
Now, cannot recal when it started exactly and if I did something special...
My laptop is an ASUS UL 80V running on windows 7 64bit.
If tried updating the intel chipset drivers, no help....
Then I replaced the internal HD with an SSD HD and made a complete fresh Windosw 7 install just to find out that my problem still exists.
Again updated my intel ICH9 chipset drivers but without result...so it does not look like a software problem? Anybody an idea/solution?

As I know, the latest USB devices (USB3) can transfer at a rate of 5 Gbit/s whereas USB2 does it at 480 Mbit/s and USB1.1 does it at 12 Mbit/s . If your USB port is a older one, a latest USB device will pop this message up .

This laptop is a bit more than 1 year old and has never generated this message and always had "fast" USB transfers...
I have USB2 ports...I dont care about the msg(easy to get rid off), but the lack of transfer speed does gets me crazy...

It could be caused by the following.... If an external hdd is removed incorrectly, the next time it connects, the latency caused by a sort of file check can cause the system to think it is a lower usb speed than it should be. Try a checkdisk on such a hdd, it will take a long time.... When finished, correctly remove. Next time you plug in, it shoul be back to normal speed.

I came across a page describing an issue with the Win7 SP1 update related to USB drivers.
Seems the SP1 doesn't upgrade all the USB files correctly.
Microsoft released a patch to update the USB drivers properly:
Binary files in some USB drivers are not updated after you install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Maybe the broken SP1 update caused you USB driver to go into legacy mode (USB1.1)

I ran the patch myself and my "Windows\System32\drivers\usbport.sys" went from version "6.7.7600.16358" to "..16788".
Unfortunately it didn't fix my issue with virtualbox (unrelated to you prob)

Have you checked the settings in the BIOS?

As mentioned in the last post here,

http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/155640-device-can-perform-faster.html#post1528569

That was my thread :)

Also, make sure the USB device is correctly and firmly mounted on the port. I noticed that the front USB ports on my desktop are somewhat loose, causing USB 1.1 speeds and that popup to appear if my usb stick is inserted incorrectly. It's often overlooked but often causes the issue.

Problem solved...installed original HD again and jumped back to factory settings to find out that the problem still existed. I checked those files which sometimes did not get properly updated after SP1 installation but they where correct...I ran a BIOS update and yes, its working again...there is a BIOS update for a known problem with a faulty USB controller in the device manager...
Installed again my new SSD HD and yes, its rocks now!
The only thing is that my internal webcam remains black when switched on but I can live with that!
Thanks guys for thinking with me!
