This Is Apple's Next iPhone
You are looking at Apple's next iPhone. It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing, and here are all the details.

How Apple Lost the Next iPhone
The Gourmet Haus Staudt. A nice place to enjoy good German ales. And if you are an Apple Software Engineer named Gray Powell, it's also a nice place to make the honest mistake of losing the next-generation iPhone.

The 27-year-old Powell—a North Carolina State University 2006 graduate and talented amateur photographer—is an Apple Software Engineer working on the iPhone Baseband Software, the little program that enables the iPhone to make calls. A dream job for a talented engineer like Powell, an Apple fan who always wanted to meet Steve Jobs.

Proof:
A Letter: Apple Wants Its Secret iPhone Back

Well, how can I explain this? I got some interesting calls today. It was Apple. And they wanted their phone back.

This phone was lost, and then found. But from Apple's perspective, it could have been considered stolen. I told them, all they have to do to get it back is to claim it—on record. This formal request from Apple's legal department is that claim. It proves—if there was any doubt in your mind—that this thing is real.

Anyone else beside me wonder about all these "leaks"? If a company really wanted to keep their products secret, you'd think they would do a better job.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I suspect that these "leaks" and "mistakes" are marketing ploys.

I wonder what term we should affix to an intentional leak. There is absolutely positively no way that an employee lost this phone out in public.

In this case, I guess you could call it an iLeak.

Yeah ppl do mistakes, but an "secret phone" from Apple just sounds hummm... unlikely.
If it was there new phone, why should they give it out to an employee. shouldnt it be at Apple's development center?

photoshop...
I don't think so. Showing fake iPhone and telling it MAY be next iPhone and faking letter and telling it IS official letter from Apple is different things.

Gawker Media which own Gizmodo (online gadget and technology blog who got hands on this iPhone) isn't little silly company. It is considered as one of the most successful blog orientated companies.
And I bet they do know about all the legal stuff which will come to them if they will fake official Apple letter and claim as real.

But this dosen't mean that everything is crystal clear here. In some way I tend to agree with all those conspiracy theories, that it was clear marketing move by:
a) Apple, Gray Powell (guy who lost it),
b) Apple, Gray Powell (guy who lost it), Guy who found it and been ordered to sell it some large tech blog...
c) Apple, Gray Powell (guy who lost it), and Gawker Media/Gizmodo.

Reason for including "Gzimodo" in option C is that in reality with this news they are doing really good profit.
They have written about 4-5 articles in this subject and last time I checked first article itself had 5,5 million views which is A LOT!

Haha :)

Ok, now Let's assume it wasn't PR and really happened.
Why did Apple employee had prototype iPhone with him?

Field testing....

Apple is more aggressive than that when it comes to things it doesn't want.

Yes, it is...
We all have heard about Apple's own Gestapo whose job is just hunt down leaks.

It is really strange the way the phone has been lost.

So as I already have mentioned, in a way I do agree with PR strategy.
But at the same time it spoils all the surprise effect for Apple, therefore it may lead to lose of money.

Who knows... Everything is possible ;)

BTW. Malware developers already got hold of the story:

Was just going to post this, watched it on MSNBC. Evidently Apple finally responded with a message stating "We heard you have one of our phones please return it" Question is do you think this guy got fired or is in some iDungeon somewhere?Fabe Apple worker leaves new iPhone in California bar - Times Online

I don't think he is fired, nor do I think he will be fired.

As Gizmodo has already revealed who he is, so now he has lots of media eyes turned to him. That's why I think it will be stupid thing to do for Apple.

but from now on, he will probably have a lot of restrictions on his current job.

P.S. I really liked how you put it: "iDungeon"

Apple Didn't Leak the iPhone—and Why That Matters
http://gizmodo.com/5520746/apple-didnt-leak-the-iphoneand-why-that-matters said:
A controlled leak? The lost iPhone planted by Apple? You have no idea how Apple PR works—and how, like it or not, Gizmodo finally beat them at their own game.

The only way the iPhone 4 was a controlled leak is if Apple has completely upended its PR strategy, which is the envy of the entire business world. The only way it could even work, presuming it were true, would be the destruction of a decade of meticulously laid plans. It would be cashing in all the marketing chips for no clear gain; Does anyone really think the iPhone 4 wouldn't have been a huge story on its own in June?

Gizmodo said they dismantled the prototype to unveil its inner workings. Anyone ever wonder why they never released their findings, i.e. specifics?
