I think that something worth noting here is that many ISP's are offering Free subscriptions to Paid-For products such as Norton and McAfee. So don't rule out paid-for options yet without checking what your provider offers.

Here are some examples:

Time Warner, Optimum & Roadrunner Subscribers can download CA's Internet Security Suite Plus

The point is that you should see if your current ISP offers a viable A/V & Firewall from a reputable company as well as investigate other free and paid-for options.

Here is a study by PCTools that I found interesting.

PC Pitstop Research analyzed 50,258 computers and found the following:

• 23% of computers have no active security protection.
• 14% of the computers had some sort of high level threat.
• Spyware is the most common malware threat followed by Rogue Security Software.
• Kaspersky protects the best against Rogue Security Software and Trend Micro is the worst.
• Symantec protects against spyware the best, and Kaspersky the worst.
• Trend protects the best against keyloggers and Avast fares the worst.
• Kaspersky protects against viruses the best, and Symantec tails the pack.

No offense or responsibility to the poster but I just tried the free CA's Internet Security Suit Plus via Optimum on my Win7 Ult 64 machine and it sucked big time. Made me uninstall MalwareBytes and reboot or would not allow a install, then would only do a internet install and at the end reported it failed a proper install but still installed to enough of a degree to run. Placed ad's and popups everywhere and a whole bunch of other bad stuff. Then would not uninstall even though it was in the control panel.

Had to do a restore point to get it off.

I highly don't recommend it.

So... what do y'all use? I had to uninstall AVG Free yesterday because the update won't allow anything to run in full screen. It's an issue others are experiencing too. I'd like to go open source
