Three updates will not uninstall (the W10 nonsense)

I'm trying to fix my wife's computer running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. The main problem is that it cannot find any new updates, and I've tried I don't know how many tricks, tips, and troubleshooting options available.

I started wondering if there's an update that was getting in the way, and I remembered the three that were created to service the free Windows 10 update. I've been able to delete them before, but now it doesn't work.

The three updates I want to get rid of are KB3035583, KB2952664, KB3021917

Unfortunately, when I try to uninstall them via Windows Update, the process gets out to about 90% and then stops, returning the message

An error occurred. No all of the updates were successfully uninstalled.

So I tried via command prompt wusa /uninstall /kb:3035583 (as an example), running as Administrator. When I do this, I get the following message

Installer encountered an error: 0x80070643
Fatal error during installation

Does anyone have a recommendation for getting rid of these items that doesn't involve a clean installation?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Clean install shouldn't normally be an issue unless you get the cart before the horse and install a bunch of programs before updating windows

I was hoping to avoid a clean installation (the existing one is only 18 months old) but if that's what's needed, that's what I'll do.

And thanks for the warning about updating first. I already do that with new installations (I learned the hard way a long time ago) but it may help someone else who reads this.

Thanks!

Hi Cpmusic,

download the GWX panel, it will remove the W10 installer folders in those KB's.

http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/GwxControlPanelSetup.exe

Actually, I already installed that panel (a great tool!) when it was first available. I uninstalled it while trying to find the root of the "checking forever" problem, thinking that it may have gotten in the way. But that was before I tried to uninstall those three specific updates.

I haven't checked yet, but if nothing else, I'm hopeful that the computer has a restore point before the oldest of those three updates (roughly 7/10/16). If all else fails, I'll get another drive and re-install 7 from scratch.

Thanks!

Hi:

In addition to excellent advice already offered....

GWX ended months ago, so there's no need to be afraid of it.
KB2952664 has nothing to do with GWX any longer:

There is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update.
And MS issued a special patch (KB3184143) specifically to remove GWX from Win7/SP1 systems.

Cheers,
MM
