I am new to Windows 7 having just bought a laptop. I am also not particularly computer literate being a 'silver surfer', so need help. I have tried to set up Live Mail and used the e-mail account and password on my desktop where I use Outlook Express ( it is an XP operating system). I can now send e-mail using my laptop and although replies are received on the desktop they are not received by the laptop.
What am I doing wrong? I want to be able to send and receive from both.

Hi, OllyAnna, welcome to the forums!

Check the settings on your desktop to be sure you are leaving a copy of the email on the server within Outlook Express.

Look here and here for further insight.

If Outlook Express (on your desktop) is not configured to leave a copy on the server, your laptop never has a chance to receive the email if your desktop gets to it first. Consequently, you will want to check your laptop email settings pertaining to such or your desktop will not be able to receive the email your laptop gets to first. If you are not having that issue, more than likely your laptop is already set up properly,

Thanks Miked, I have got the desktop set up as you say- to leave a copy on the server.
I have since noticed that when I go into the account on the laptop there is a 'sync' option is this anything to do with my problem?

Sorry, that was my best shot, in this case, given the information and my experience. I don't use Live Mail, I use Outlook 2007 and I used to use Outlook Express a long time ago.

However, there are many talented members here so I am confident you will find your answer.

Sync corresponds to Outlook Express's "Send and Receive". So you need to "leave copy on server" if you want to download and save your pop3 mail on both computers. If instead you want one "main" computer to download and delete from server and one just to view what has not yet been deleted from the server by the "main" computer, then just set up the "viewing" computer to "leave copy on server".

What I want to do is receive e-mail on my desktop but have the facility to view replies sent to my desktop inbox, on my laptop.
If I use the 'import' setting will it bring everything across permanently? because this is not what I want.
I want the facility to send mail from my laptop and I also want to be able to read the replies from my laptop.
At the moment I can send mail but as I said I am still not receiving any and I don't know how to set it up. I have tried various configurations of 'leave copy on server' eg on desktop, but not on laptop .....
on laptop but not desktop, but up to now I have been unable to access received messages. Hope this makes some sort of sense.

How to use IMAP in Virgin Media Mail

Switching to IMAP from POP3 will allow you to automatically synchronise you two systems and by the use of folders and subscriptions you can filter what is shown on each computer.

The other advantage is that the mails are automatically backed up on the sever so an OS crash is normally recoverable

Will follow your advice and set IMAP up tomorrow, - getting a bit late now for my grey cells to function properly! Some weird stuff happening this evening, two e-mails came in to my desktop, then I went on my laptop to check some settings and two different e-mails suddenly appeared there, although they were not on my desktop PC. Just don't get it!!!
One last question . Is IMAP as secure, and what happens if I move provider?

Imap is as secure as POP as long as your provider applies SSL (secure socket layer - security ), to Both, most do.

The question of moving providers will be always be an issue if you use the ISP's own email service,

If you do not have too much time in with the virgin system I would suggest that you set up an account with googlemail Google as they have secure IMAP 7+ GB of email space, and they have a collector service for other providers which would collect mail from virgin and any other online accounts you have now or set-up in the future

you would give out your gmail address to people you know and set gmail to collect your virgin mail but reply from gmail. this way you would transition smoothly from virgin to gmail and if you ever change providers you gmail would not be effected.

It all looks a little complex but I can walk you through any questions you have if you go this way. I can state that it does work as I use this system myself over multiple systems and accounts

It is great to have someone to talk to who knows what they are doing!
It does sound complicated, especially for someone lacking in computer knowledge like me! I may take you up on the offer to 'walk me through it' though, as I have been thinking of something similar for a while, just in case I do change provider. I nearly changed this year but they offered me a good deal, so stayed with Virgin for the time being. I have always been worried by the thought of how to copy my contacts, saved e-mail etc when moving to a new e-mail client/address.
I forgot to say, I do have a Virgin Webmail account, so I can access my mail when I am away from home at present.
My original problem came about the other evening when I tried to contact a company using their own online-contact form and I tried to send it from my laptop. Of course, it wouldn't let me and I had to set up the Live Mail account. Then, when I got a reply, it was received on my desktop computer but not my laptop. This started me wondering about how to have it all set up, and if I had done something wrong. In effect, I do already have the facility to send from my laptop perhaps It would be easier to use the Virgin webmail log on to read my e mail when using the laptop ?
If I do transfer to G-mail will all these changes cause issues with my router settings? I have just had to set a Netgear one up, and had problems. What a sharp learning curve! The wizard didnt connect me, then I couldn't access my e-mail. So, I am dreading 'undoing, all this and causing problems now I seemingly have the router working OK.

Using gmail will not have any effect on your router settings, these would only need to change if you went to a different ISP.

You can do everything you want to do with your new live account but would need the full MS outlook to achieve this.

I would therefore suggest that the gmail / IMAP is the way to go.
