Time to install SP1

Exactly, and as it should be. There really is no reason not to have SP1 installed by now. The service pack has been out for nearly two years now. Any issues, perceived or otherwise, has been worked out by now.

I would assume there were still a large number of PCs whose OEM factory restore will not include SP1. I assume presume MS will still facilitate the automatic SP1 upgrade. I also think many people aren't that technically savvy to manually upgrade.

How do you slipstream SP1 into a factory restore partition?

I've made successful slipstream CDs for XP.

I haven't been able to make a successful slipstream DVD of W7.
The DVD crashed during the final stage of the installation sequence.

Instead of trying to slipstream SP1 yourself download the ISO images from DigitalRiver which already have SP1 integrated. It is also the best way to install a service pack, start clean. You don't need to format just install over your old instillation.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.
You can get a ISO image from DigitalRiver of Window 7 which includes the SP-1 and just install it over the the old instillation with out format. If so do you loose any thing. Or does in kind of install like a repair install and save your things and settings.

It puts the old installation in Windows.old from there you can move out what you want to keep and delete the rest. That is how I always reinstall Windows.

Yes I did.
Everything seemed to go exactly as per the tutorial, but when the install reached the final stage (preparing the desktop?) it just wouldn't finish.

I think that the problem was related to the W7 updates after SP1.
I didn't experiment to find out the exact problem, as it took so long to create the faulty DVD, that it was quicker to use my original DVD and the SP1 DVD to install W7 the "long" way.

I had a similar problem with my XP CD.
It wouldn't work if I included the XP updates after SP3.
I ended up just creating a CD with SP3 + AHCI drivers, which worked as expected.

If SP2 is released for W7, I might spend some time experimenting to find out exactly what happened (I can't be bothered now).
I have backup initial install images of my operating systems, so I won't need to do a total reinstall.

These "suckers" should install SP1. End of Story. They are still supported by installing the service pack. Its not some global conspiracy, its just business, supporting old versions of things will end sooner or later.

Wrong! MS entered into a special relationship with OEM/SLPs and these customers need special consideration. These customers are probably the biggest money spinner for MS "End of Story" mate. It's very doubtful that the OEM will support them.

Just a though. If a computer without Sp-1 tries to get Windows Updates without SP-1 many will fail and cause problems. Then of course it will be Microsoft's fault for not forcing SP-1 on to every Windows 7 computer.
I'm thinking that Windows 7 Updates has gave notice to all Windows 7 computers many, many tiess; Please check me so I will install and make your system safer and smoother. My understanding one has to choose not to install SP-1 or the system doesn't have a proper COA activation.
To all the new computer users of Window 7; just install SP-1 like a 100 millions of us already have.

Also to new users that might not know if they have SP-1 do this.
On your keyboard hit the Windows Flag key (lower left) and the Pause key (upper right) and you will see this.

I setup win7 ultimate on a PC hooked to my TV and turned off all MS updates.
I did this cause I remember running in past windows would do so many updates the performance kept dropping with what I think was bloatware.

So, as long as Netflix and Amazon Prime and other online video just works, I plan to leave it as is.

So far pretty much not much has ever happened with malware.

Do you think Silverlight will continue to work?
