It’s time to upgrade from the Windows 7 Release Candidate


While most people who tested Windows 7 have now moved to the final version, some are still running the Release Candidate. If you haven’t moved yet, it’s time to replace the RC.

Starting on March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown.

The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. Your PC running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.

To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. Is that gonna start after a windows update or is it something that was implanted in the RC version from the start? Cause if it's the 1st case, the users could simply not install that specific update..

Yes, It's a sort of system timer that is built in. I'm afraid any hacks that are seen on the internet to avoid the system shutting down will not work and will only render the system unworkable, one of the symptoms could be the WGA now telling you the system is not genuine, hence cutting off access from support, updates etc..

Comparable. Though it won't be liquid cooled since I can't be fussed maintaining that. And with an SSD + storage drive instead of a RAID array. Building it myself, rather than purchasing. Took so long assembling the parts list because I was set on an ATI 5970 for a card, but haven't been lucky enough to get one. Knowing the time limit for the RC is up forced doing it now.

Getting a little side tracked from the thread's purpose, I think.

Sounds good. When I got mine the first thing I did was disable RAID and reinstall the system.

The liquid cooling on mine is, according to what I read, permanently sealed and should, hopefully, never need maintenance. It's the one on the left here: http://www.asetek.com - OEM Products except it's single CPU of course.
