Hi there

Suggestion for the Mods

With so many builds and X-86/X-64 versions I suggest that people should always now state what build and what version they are using.

It doesn't help people to suggest an answer or even find one if you look at a post which just says

"I've just installed W7 but XXXX is broken - doesn't work."

We really also ought to know if it also is a Clean install / Upgrade from Vista or XP (Home -- yes you can upgrade from XP to an x-86 version but only XP Home not XP PRO strangely enough).

Cheers

jimbo

Hi there -- putting systems specs in theory is OK - but I'm often trying this stuff out on a large variety of different configurations and a lot of "Virtual Configurations" as well.

i agree jimbo45, when asking for help ppl should state which build they're running & any other relevant info, but many dont know what H/W they have..... so when answering others questions which lack the data you require, your gonna have to just point out what you need from these ppl. ;)

the Mods are not gonna check that all the info within their posts is present for someone to answer them, its just impractical.....

for ppl not knowing what hardware they are running is impractical as well ;)

If they have a dell or whatever, usually all the info is posted on a sticker somewhere(which they probly removed lol)... other than that, all the info on hardware would be in device manager. And if you are on this forum and dont know how to get to the device manager by now, well ..... i cant imagine.

look...... many ppl are not PC savvy.

you cant come down on someone b/c they don't know whats inside theyre machine

no one is asking you to go out of your way to answer someone who has not, or cannot fill out their details..... we do our best to ask those we come across to fill them out, but as this is an ''OS support forum'' there's gonna be many who never think about their PCs until they have a problem.

skunk if you cant identify a piece of hardware, what makes you think that person can identify a "correct" problem? Thats almost like having a car, but dont know what brand of tires you have. If there is a company recall on that said tire and you have it but dont know...... well, i guess i'll see them on the side of the road. If ppl can take the time to search/post on a forum, they can certainly take the time to investigate what kind of hardware they are running... couldnt be that hard at all.... Only situation i could think of would be a exclamation next to a hardware (other devices) and it being from a "vista pc". But even IF, they can suss out which piece of hardware ISNT working and go from there.

Maybe even a sticky on how to find that out for the non "savvy" ppl. Dont have to be savvy to figure out or to take the actual time to figure out what hardware they have... most things have labels. Secondly, running a beta OS, installing and configuring is supposed to be more than a novice type of task. Its just a small conveniant part on behalf of the person describing a problem, rather than having a thread go on and on, about responding about what hardware they have, fresh or upgrade, and you are starting out the solution to the problem on the 3rd page of the thread. Is all i gotta say.

yes..... you have a point, but the ppl who have not filled out they're specs either think they're not gonna be here long enough to need them listed, they don't think its relevant, or they just don't know.......

so in any case you'll have to explain this to those anyway....... the offenders you speak of will also spend no time reading sticky's, (they probably have no clue what they are either), so your gonna have to be a bit nicer to the nubs, who look at you & think...''this guy can help me'' little do they know you wont give them the time of day unless they know the ins & outs of their machines...

thats the situation.

Well, in that case, those ppl dont even have to register to view the forums, only reg to post.

Well, being a sticky, at the TOP of the forum/subforum, its kinda hard to miss. Thats like saying, no reason to wear my seatbelt, i'm just going around the corner to the store.
Also, its not like they handed in their pc here at the shop and i can actually look for myself. All of this is known, not saying anything others arent thinking, i'm sure.

Maybe being a required fields to register would help out lots. Atleast the processor (type), atleast HOW MUCH memory, audio and video.... and possibly nic card, wired or wireless. I dont need to know how big the psu is, or what brand of DVDRW they have, only unless a specific problem related to that possible specific hardware would that be needed.

And lastly but ESPECIALLY what darn build they are on! I cant tell you how many questions are posted without what build they are running. This saves time, forum pages and headaches.

having a ''required field'' to sign up might be an idea, but again anyone who does not have that info will just move on to a site that does not require it.....

but TBH ive had enough of explaining to you the reasons why your schemes may be ''ultimately'' detrimental to the forum, if you wish to ask ADMIN direct thats your prerogative, but i think you'll hear the same as you've just been told.

have a nice day
