i wonder if there's a better alternative, as that results in an odd two-stage xp install process.

Creating an XP USB installation drive can be tricky, but I've managed to locate a method that works. I've not actually installed it yet as I need to perform a bit of surgery on my machine (plugging the HDD that I'll be using for XP into a different SATA socket).

I haven't actually completed this task yet, it is still a work in progress.

i was asking dwarf how he got the xp install files onto usb.

I used WinSetupFromUSB 0-2-2, which is quite easy to use and does pretty much everything that is required to create a bootable XP USB drive, although you still need to prepare the drive by following METHOD TWO steps 1 - 16 here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html

Note that the same restrictions will apply as with a standard XP installation disk in that supplementary drivers that may be required during setup will still need to be provided on a floppy disk.
