Today I finally decided that it was time for XP to go away. For some reason I have been attempting to make myself believe it was still a necessary OS, albeit it just wasn't happening. With the ability to run Vista in a VM, along with a copy of Win 7 32 bit it just didn't make a bit of sense to continue to work with XP.

Vista 32 will do just about anything that I need in legacy programs that will not run, or work properly on Win 7 64 bit. The only real application I was using which required XP or Vista 32 bit was Cool Edit Pro 2000 (which was used to record and convert all my reel to reel tapes, and records (45's and 33 1/3's to mp3, and wave format)). Now that I am finished with a project that has taken five years there is really no reason to keep XP around. Not even just to play with.

After working with Win 7 for the past year and half I find going into XP is like going from XP to Win 3.xx or 95.

So today I took all the XP VM's off of my computer. Next I bundled up all my copies of XP and shipped them off to one of my brothers. He is hard headed and still lives in a world where upgrading is considered silly, and bordering on stupid. He is of the mind that if it isn't broken. . .so what; don't do anything until it is (still love him).

So it is good buy to XP, and looking forward to Win 8. . .:geek:

My last XP machine was my Dell mini 9, came with XP Home. Stuck Win 7 RC on it and it was so much faster and nicer than XP. Ended up putting Win 7 Pro on it in August and then Ultimate soon after when I upgraded to a faster and larger 16GB SSD.

Yesterday I installed OSX Snow Leopard and it is leaps and bounds faster then XP and a tad faster than Win 7.
I am very surprised.
It was hard to get used to at first since I have only used a Mac in the past for about 15 minutes.
I may end up trading this Mini for a Toshiba netbook with a friend since he hates Windows now, he's been a Mac convert for about a year now. I'll probably never switch from Windows but knowing how to use and fix OSX will help me make some money.

I have an ATI Theatre 650 Pro TV card. It is the only hardware I own that won't work in 7.

I have an ATI TV Wonder 650 pro installed under Windows 7 and it's using the theatre drivers and working fine with Media Center.

I see you have an ATI video card, the video card drivers should automatically install the tuner drivers as well. Download the latest ATI Catalyst Drivers, choose custom install and check that "ATI Theater Driver" check box is checked.

And ATI hasn’t released a "standalone" TV Tuner driver for Win 7 (yet)

As for XP, I haven't used it since I went Vista, then 7 but I keep my XP hard drive just in case :)

Zepher, The Mac OS is very good except in two areas:
1. Finder file manager cannot compare to Wn7's Explorer. Because of this
I use a third party application called "Pathfinder."
2. There really is not a good Office Suite for the Mac.

Cassa, no he never even served in the military. Really never had to, and the main reason is he is twelve years younger than I am. Hence, he was to young for Veit Nam, and too old for the Desert Storms I and II; lucky him. :D

TDI, Back in the 60's, and 70's when reel to reel was really the popular way to go must of my music was bought on reel to reel tapes. Also at the time records were the primarily way to go, so most of us who bought records used the reel to reels to record the records so they would stay in good shape. Over the years (1956 - 1989) must of my music was records that I had recorded to tape (all reel to reel because of quality). Then in the 90's I started to replace them with CD's.

Now jumping to the 2000's tapes and tape recorders are hard to find (especially reel to reel). So about five years ago I decide to convert everything over to MP3's and the Wave format. The MP3's for my iPod, and the Wave format because it would keep the quality at a high level if for some reason I needed to replace a MP3 file. :)

Lee, you have been separated for too long. This Jarhead was poking fun at a Navy Captain's insatiable need to fix things that are not broken. Or to paint perfectly good bulkheads.

I started another thread regarding my ATI TV card problem.

Now, I have to attend to my HoneyDo list. Something about painting all the red rocks yellow and the yellow rocks red.

My XP never died - because I never had one. But I keep Vista around (which I love). Main reason is because I could never get Gimp2 work right in Win7 and it works perfectly in Vista. Besides I sometimes need it to assist people on the Vista forum.

It's certainly not dead in this house as my husband uses my old XP machine, he's quite happy with it so as long as it runs it will continue to be used.

It will be replaced when we have the money and I need a new machine, the rule in this house is I get the new and then it's a case of hand me down whatever I was using at the time.:p

Yep... same here.

We tried W7 on our netbook (Acer Aspire One) and after repeated complaints of slowness we put XP back in... It's still slow, but not tragicly so...

The HTPC system (ASRock ION 330) is a great little lunchbox sized Mini-ITX machine with full 1080p capabilities. It runs only one program (MPC-HC) and works like spit on XP... but on Win7 it burbled and dropped frames like crazy. We tried WMP and WMC and that was worse by orders of magnitude... so it went back on XP too.

My Wife's machine is back on XP after some network hassles. Most of the family's laptops are still on XP, with one on Ubuntu and one Powerbook.

My own desktop system is now dual booting XP and 7... with XP as the primary. We had a lot --and I mean a LOT-- of problems updating to win7 and now the only time I fire it up is when nobody else is using the LAN...

I am increasingly aware this runs contrary to most people's experiences and am devoting a fair bit of free time to trying to figure out why... We have invested $1200 in Win7, planning a family-wide update, but until the problems can be resolved, XP is still very much alive and well in this household.

I miss Win7.. it's hard for me to want to keep XP after being forced to downgrade back to XP due to hard drive issues. I'm so used to the features in 7, along with the stability I've found in it. Plus, how am I to develop programs for Windows 7 when I am not running Windows 7? :(

Sadly still using XP.

Did you explore whether you could run Win7 in e.g. Virtual Box. I did that with the Beta and the prerelease and that worked very well. My tutorial in this zip folder will tell you how (just note that this tutorial is over 1 year old and there might be slight differences).

DSL 6000
Did you explore whether you could run Win7 in e.g. Virtual Box. I did that with the Beta and the prerelease and that worked very well. My tutorial in this zip folder will tell you how (just note that this tutorial is over 1 year old and there might be slight differences).

Thank you for the tutorial, but my hard drive issue is that it's only 18 gigabytes in size. I would have about 80% of the hard drive covered by 7 alone. At the moment, I only have 3 gigabytes left with XP installed. :(
