Too much white space on screen

Hello,

Have recently purchased a new laptop Dell 1720 with Windows 7 installed. Graphics card is an Intel Integrated Media Accelerator 4500MHD.

When viewing most websites, I am getting large amounts of white space on 1 or both sides of the page. On many of them, it will take up nearly 1/2 of the screen...looks very stupid in my opinion especially since one of these websites is mine!

My screen resolution is set at the default of 1440x900. I can make it lower but it lessens the quality of the picture and still does not fill out the screen properly especially for websites that are aligned toward 1 side.

Is there something else I can try?

There are different ways to deal with the problem, like on this forum there are different skin options in the dropdown window at the bottom left of the screen. Choose one of the wide screen options, and you will definitely see a difference. Also, depending on the browser that you use, there are options to view pages at various zooms, which typically is used just to make momentary adjustments for a particular purpose. My browser also has an option to fit the page to the screen.

Yes, a keyboard shortcut can be used to zoom in a browser -
'Ctrl' + '='.
It makes everything bigger, but if it is white space you don't want, i'm sure on certain browsers there is an option to change the background colour, in Internet Explorer for example.

Yes, the Control + does work in Firefox but seems to lessen the picture quality a bit...guess I will just have to accept that. What browser are you using that has the option to fit screen?

I expect fit screen will be just zooming, like 'Ctrl' + '=' but to the exact webpage size.

Opera. If you decide to try it, and don't feel comfortable with it, let me know. There are plenty of way to customize it.
