Torx screw size in 2.5" drive coverplate?

I believe that the star-head screws that fasten down the lid of a 2.5" HDD are Torx, size T7.

Is anyone able to confirm this?

(And yes, I'm aware that removing the top cover will render the drive useless).

I have had drive's that use not only torx but also hex and Phillips, So it's hard to say.


What are ya after the magnet's, I have quite a few of them they are really really strong for their size.

I think they probably are without seeing a picture of them.
You can get a pack of 6 [T5 T6 T7 T8 T9 T10] precision Torx screwdrivers from Amazon for about £2.75 [sorry, I don't know where you are!] with FREE postage.

+1 on the assorted pack of Torx screwdrivers. If you are going to disassemble a hard drive, you will need a lot more than just one size of Torx bit.

This one goes all the way down to T2, and includes a lot more than just Torx bits.

Just checked, WD 2½" hdd plate screws are T-7. But like others said, you need a few more sizes for 'complete destruction'!

Shucks, I have no idea what a T2 must look like. As far as I could tell (without an electron microscope) my T8 is around 2.2mm point to point. While my guestimate of the case screws is around 1.2mm. Which I'm guessing is the T7.
T2 must be miniscule!

T4 is the smallest I have ever needed, and that was to completely dismantle a hard drive (just for the fun of it). But it has been several years since I did that; and I'm sure the Ifixit folks do a lot more hardware dismantling than I do.
