Q) I want to control an HTPC in one room, from a laptop in another room.

Can anyone tell me how to set up TOTAL read / write / modify privileges on a desktop machine?

It's an OFFLINE machine, dedicated for HTPC, with 23 partitions, 27 terabytes drive space.

OS is W7 RTM (Pro).

If dis-abling ALL security / UAC will accomplish this, then I can do that as well...

Thanks.................................

For Control:
Just install TeamViewer (free for Home Users) on both HTPC and your laptop. Then configure HTPC to allow LAN connections (exclusively) - In the top menu - Extras - Options - Network Settings - Incoming LAN connections - set to "accept exclusively". Then set a static password for the HTPC - Top Menu - Connection - Setup Unattended Access.

Connect using the HTPC PC name or IP address (if it doesn't work) and provide the password when prompted.

For file sharing (on HTPC):
Network and Sharing Center - Advanced Sharing Settings - "Turn on File and Printer Sharing" and enable "password protected sharing"
Right click the folder/drive you wish to share and properties - Sharing - Advanced Sharing - Tick "Share this folder" - click permissions - add the main user of HTPC and tick Read only (untick others). Also untick "Full Control" and "Change" for Administrators as well. Ok out.
Again in properties - Security tab - add your HTPC account and give Full Control.
Now in Windows Explorer - Network - select HTPC - enter HTPC username/password. Or write its IP address at the top in the address bar as like \\HTPC-IP-address (i.e., \\192.168.0.11

An infection on your laptop would also have "TOTAL read / write / modify privileges on a desktop machine". Your desktop machine is not "OFFLINE" if it is on a home network where other computers are online.

Try GokAy's suggestion and let us know how it goes :-)

UNI, I edited the post to add File Sharing. What do you think about it? Perhaps reduce it to Read/Read-Execute only?

Read/only might work, but infections are all about exploits to gain permissions beyond what is set. The OP needs to understand that the desktop machine is not OFFLINE. Just think how much damage a Crypto type of infection residing on the laptop could do to all of those terabytes of files residing on the desktop. Antivirus apps have not been able to stop all versions of Crypto type infections.

Changed Sharing permissions to Read only.

Hopefully that should be enough. Best would be create a new standard user and give only sharing to that. But can't go into that much detail at this hour :p

Username - the ONLY time the the W7 machine is connected to the LAN, is when the LAN [modem] is physically DIS-connected from the web.

My other machines are Linux machines - more secure than Windows with all AV programs in redundancy.

But I don't want to digress there.

I want to set TOTAL access withIN the LAN...

Thanks.

Everything you may need is already given. If you want remote control TeamViewer, if you just want to access files/folders then that is also above.

There is no other way of doing things that I know of. What do you have in mind that is not listed already?

Haven't actually tried yet there Gokay... Was looking for something pretty definitive...

Only other option (not interested in downloading 3rd party stuff), would be actually logging onto the desktop with the laptop - never done that tho' - would that be easier?

I can understand your concern about 3rd party but do try TeamViewer ( you will love it). You don't need to install while trying, just tell the installer you want to run once when asked.

Microsoft equivalent is Remote Desktop but not close to TV with functionality if you ask me. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3922-remote-desktop-connection-rdc-network.html
