After reading the thread by simonsiknasty about slower internet connection, I decided to upgrade the firmware on my TP-Link WR641G Router. I currently have v3 of the firmware and v4 was available on the official Site.

However, after several attempts I have been unsuccessful in upgrading it.
Here is the upgrade screen...

tplink.jpg

I click on the BROWSE button, select the latest firmware (wr641gv4-en-up.bin) and OKAY. It looks like it's trying to do something, but nothing ever happens! Tried this in both Firefox and IE8. In IE8 the progress bar moves slowly across to about a third of the way then stops.

Has anyone had any experience of this Router, as I'm stuck on this at the moment?

Any help would be appreciated.

THX.

My old router was a TP-Link. What a stupid choice I had made.
Well, this thing looks like it has the same firmware as my old router, only difference is I had no 11G, whatever that is. I updated its firmware only once. I didn't have this issue though... Try disabling any forwarded ports and turning off the wireless before the install. During the update does the router reset itself? Do the lights blink or anything? Does it show any indication of loading, processing etc. ?

Stupid choice?? To be honest it's been the best router I've ever had so far! None of the previous routers ever had the range that this one gives me. Plus I never lose connection either, which others did. So I don't understand why you say you made a stupid choice?

Anyway, in answer to your questions, I haven't tried turning off the Wireless and other settings, as I didn't think that doing that would affect a firmware upgrade. After all, an upgrade is basically re-flashing data over the top of the old data isn't it? As for lights blinking etc, they are always blinking. The router has never reset itself during the attempted upgrades, and I did leave this running for quite some time.

It doesn't really matter if I can't upgrade I suppose, but it's just the point that I don't seem to be able to. Which is irritating. :sarc:

1 - It was a stupid choice because it died real fast. For your router I don't know. I just stick with linksys and that's all.

2 - I know the lights always blink, I'm not that stupid (lol)! I mean all the lights blinking together!

3 - About the browsers, try Opera. I updated my router with Opera, it worked fine. Never got around the new IE, it's just not my style. And Chrome? It's an Ok, browser, but could use some more features...

Nothing doing here. I have tried everything!
I have tried updating while in Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Safe Mode, Windows XP, Windows XP inside VirtualBox. Tried with Firefox, IE8 and Opera. Getting nowhere.

I really don't understand why this router refuses to upgrade?

Never mind. At least it works. I just wanted to have the latest firmware on it as it 'may' be a reason why my downloads are slower since using Windows 7.

Thanks for your help mate.

I have been on the official website to get the latest v4 firmware, but I haven't yet contacted them. I think that has to be the next thing to do, as I am totally lost with this!

I think you'll get the best help from the manufacturer - if anyone has heard of not being able to upgrade their router, it would be them.

when updating a routers firmware my plan of attack is to reset the device to factory defaults and disconnect all devices other than the Ethernet link to the PC containing the update file,(and the power :) ). This should give you the greatest chance of success

Yes, to be honest I was thinking the same as you. I'll see what their technical support say first as I've now emailed them. If I get no joy, I will try that. This damned thing will not beat me!! lol.

Some browsers (notably Firefox) will "block" items downloaded from anywhere without a high security rating, (the Web) These items will have a button on the lower right of the properties dialogue box "unblock".
Directly running the file (e.g. EXE files) will produce a warning prompt but sometimes trying to open a blocked file will fail without any dialogue

If there is no Unblock button on the properties then it's nothing to worry about

Okay, finally got it sorted thanks to the technical support at TP-Link.
I basically downloaded the wrong file. :o
I got the right router but the wrong version of firmware. As soon as I downloaded the correct one, things went perfect without a hitch. I'm just hoping now that I get my 20mb connection running top speed again now, because since I have started using Windows 7, my Newsleecher is up and down like a yo-yo! Maybe, just maybe, this upgrade on the router may fix this. (from reading other threads)
