It'd depend entirely upon the media quality and read/write speeds (your SD card or USB stick I mean) within the known constraints of USB transfer speeds... so how's it possible for anyone to answer your point?

I have great confidence in many people knowing more about this than me. I expect there is a rule of thumb on the issue. But thanks anyway for reflecting on it.

You think all removable media offers the same performance? Interesting. Unfortunately there are very significant differences. For instance, with SD/SDHC cards, there are an assortment of 'card classes' with varying performance. Some USB memory sticks are faster than others for that matter.

Unless you can cite your actual hardware nobody can reply with any accuracy.
