Transfering Files and Settings

Hope I have posted in the right place!

I have a Desktop running Win 7 Home premium and have recently installed Win 7 Professional on my laptop. I want to transfer the desktop and other settings (MS Office) and files from the desktop to the laptop.


The desktop has 2 drives, one with Windows and program files and the other with User Data.


My laptop has one drive partitioned with a similar setup, Windows and Programs on the C: partition and User Data on the D: partition.


When I try to transfer I get the message the transfer cannot take place because there is not enough room and to delete some files to make room. The problem seems to be that the transfer wizzard is trying to transfer everything from the Desktop to the C: drive of the laptop, rather than C: to C: and D: to D:. Is there a way around this ? I have tried to map the drives but it won’t let me do that!


Secondly, if I only try to transfer fewer files, I am told the Desktop is not connected to the domain, but I have not set up a domain and when I try on the desktop, the option is greyed out. Any suggestions for this?

I never use Easy Transfer or any other transfer wizard as importing settings is a corruption path.

Better to drag and drop your files to/from external or over network. Saves a lot of space, too.

Thanks, gregrocker. Normally that would be my approach, but tbeing new to Win 7 I thought I'd give this a try. It seems Windows 'Easy' Transfer isn't so 'Easy'!

Looks like I'll be spending a couple of days copying files and manually configuring Windows and Word again!

You're welcome.

You can use the Import and Export features on Outlook/Windows Live Mail variations to import Mail and Contacts to a new install after exporting them over the network or to a storage device.

Greg's approach is probably the best, however last week I did the Easy Transfer of files from desktop to my new laptop and it performed a network transfer without any hitches.

My laptop came with 2 separate drives each being 250GB.
The C drive is where it loaded everything up and the D drive is where I can store anything and eveything. E drive is the recovery and F drive is Hp tools.
Plus I have a 500GB WD MyBook External drive. So you see I have more extra space than in my garage.

You referred to settings you wanted to transfer from Office so I inferred you are using Outlook.

Gregrocker, I use office but not Outlook.

The Howling Wolves, I use an unattend.xml to put my User Profile on the D: drive, not just data but the whole profile. MS doesn't like this, I know but it is the way I like it and I have an inkling this is part of my problem.

Thanks to you both for trying to help. I have a paid for version of AllwaySync so will use this for data files. As for settings, I'll have to tweak them manually as I am unsure where the appropriate files are and whether copying them is really viable on a different system.
