Hi there, In a nutshell what i am wanting to accomplish is to be able to log onto my desktop PC and access files that are on my laptop. Transferring large files takes a long time when you have to copy it to an external HDD and then back again onto another PC so i am hoping that if i get this working it will solve my problem.

I have tried multiple things like Homegroups and setting the sharing permissions on files to allow me to access them but neither of these options work, i even followed the guide for the later attempt that is posted in a thread further down on this forum.

When it comes to the homegroup i set up the homegroup on my laptop (by following a guide someone wrote on this forum) but when i go to access the hoemgroup on my desktop it does not say that there is a homegroup already on the network to access, and yes both computers are on the same wireless network.

When it comes to the sharing permissions i follow the PDF also found on this forum to the letter but when it comes to going onto my desktop, opening the network screen my laptop is just not there.

I am wondering if anyone could help solve my problem, sorry for the uber long thread btw, wanted to get all the information i would in one post without having to reply to people asking for more.

you could try a flashdrive (depending on the size of the files and flashdrive memory), and you can install SyncToy which can help sync files to the flashdrive

EDIT: just reread your post and you could use synctoy to maybe speed up the process of transferring files

thanks for the reply man, but like i said in the opening post i would like to try and avoid the time of copying it to an external source and then back to the other computer :/

You could still try synctoy to see if it speeds up the transfer

You should not need to do anything special. Should not even need to create a Workgroup

If both machines are on the network they should appear in the Network folder in Explorer.

Double click one the destination PC will prompt you to login. Put in the credential as if you are logging onto that machine and it should connect to the User folder of the destination machine.

For copying speed, this would be dictated largely by the wifi spec of the machine and proximity of the two. If you want quicker i would think go via esata ports between the two.

When i go into the network folder on the destination PC the only thing that is there is that PC itself :/

Have you checked both PCs are on the same network. Do a refresh.

I'm not sure what permission or folder settings/sharings you have made, which may impact you seeing or accessing the PCs but all things default, per my previous post it will work.
