Transfering Files

I have a 160 GB HD with the OS and data files on one partition. I am wanting to buy a 500 GB HD, put my OS on one partition and my data files on another. I would use the 500 GB for my main drive and use the 160 GB for my backups. == Here is what I have in mind to get the right files in the right place. ==


A) Make a second partition on the 160 and put my data files in one and the OS in the other.

B) I can then make two partitions on the 500 and clone the files to it.

C) Then I format the 160 with two partitions and use that for my backup drive.

Does this sound like the right way to go about this? Thanks,

Hello mate.



Just use Macrium to do the "move"; I also use the 'move to' option of this a lot, it works great, especially with really large files.

That sounds like a good plan.

When I move my data files to a different partition, what do I need to do so that the programs are linked to the data files?

You're not referring to moving things in the Program Files / Program Files (x86) folders are you?

Maybe I am thinking about this wrong? I was going to leave the program files in the partition with the OS and move the data files. If I do that I would have to link the data and the program somehow. == Should I move the program and the data and leave only the OS on a partition by itself?

Have a look at my current setup to help, "Programs" are installed programs/apps, the rest is pretty much self-explanatory.

Sorry for all the questions on this. == It looks like you have only Win 7 on your C: drive and have your programs on a different HD. To make sure I am following this, you have your MS Word and all doc files on the same same F: drive, is that correct?
