Hello,

I have just bought a new laptop with Windows 7 (64 Bit) OS. I am currently working on a desktop with Vista 64 bit. How do I transfer data and settings from Desktop to Laptop? Can I use Easy Transfer for this? Or will I lose data this way?

You could use the Easy Transfer Wizard, but I wouldn't feel comfortable letting a program decide what was important to me. I would much prefer to do it myself. That way, I definitely wouldn't lose any important data.

Even if I did use the Wizard, I'd still backup my data anyway as well. Once you do that, you've already made it ready to migrate.

If you have an external drive...backup your files there, then when finished installed your new Windows 7 and feel ready, just plug the Hard drive and transfert your files.

I used Easy Transfer and it added several user profiles, and messed up security and created all kinds of unnecessary folders. I ended up restoring to factory settings and using an external drive, and just moving folder/files. Fairly easy to figure out what Mail, Firefox or IE files to move once you have both running.
