Hi

I have moved my HDD with Win 7 OS on to a Dell PC, from a pc that had an AS Rock. It won't boot, which I expected. I have inserted the OD disc into the DELL and ran all the bootrec commands etc to try and get it to start up, but it only gets as far as 'Starting Windows' and then reboots.

Should I be looking for a particular driver from DELL to install using the Win 7 disc startup repair procedure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to lose some programs that are on the HDD by re-installing the OS.

Thanks, Rik

Hi Rik,

Please let us know the model number of the system you are using. Also, check this link below which would help you resolve this issue:

Also, update your system specs here and if you need help in finding it then check this.

You could be missing drivers for the Dell board. My Inspiron 530 has this board number: Dell Inc. 0FM586 .

Else I assume you have a Win7 retail license because with an OEM license you would run into activation problems.

The only way to adjust unbootable Win7 to boot on different hardware is to first SysPrep to move HD to another computer on the old hardware, or if you've already moved it and can't move it back boot Paragon Adaptive Restore CD freeware to P2P adjust the Win7 to start on different hardware.

Hi Rik,

You should follow the advice stated above to change the windows to boot according to the new hardware on the system.

Also, if you have the data on a separate partition then you can also clean install the windows on the boot partition only by following this:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

Then you can download all the drivers from this link below:

Drivers for Inspiron 530

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

Hi all

Tried Sysprep, it still fails. Although when connecting the HDD to the original PC the drive I Syspred'd installs as it should. I have tried Paragon but it makes the Dell hang on the DELL screen when attempting to boot via Paragon USB drive created through the software. I shall attempt your advice above Sandeep. Thanks again for the support.

Hi there
If you can get the DELL computer working again take an image via ACRONIS. Create the bootable restore version and then restore to the new computer using ACRONIS "Universal restore feature". There should be enough to get a BASIS windows system up and running from which you can then do a windows UPDATE to get most of the missing new drivers.

These commercial restore / backup programs don't cost much and are worth EVERY PENNY / CENT / KOPECK / RUPEE etc etc.

(BTW forget things like SYSPREP -- that's a 20th century solution for a 21st century problem. Download a FREE trial copy of W8 enterprise --180 days validity - and build a WINDOWS to GO system on to an external HDD. Then add programs like Partition manager, Acronis, Office, and whatever else you want and you've got a great PORTABLE flexible recovery tool and a FULL PORTABLE windows system that operates like Windows in every way (including access to all local and network resources) -- and it runs BOOTS and RUNS ENTIRELY of the external USB.

I'm not suggesting CONVERTING to W8 - but using it simply as a PORTABLE tool -- beats the living daylights out of messing around with SYSPREPPING especially for home / individual users).

note to create a 64 bit windows to go system use the F3 file not the F1 mentioned in the article.

Hi Jimbo, many thanks. A little confused by the first part. I have 2 HDD, that are exactly the same, 1 was the original HDD (IDE) from the AS Rock System, and andother HDD (Sata) which is clone of the IDE drive. Both work correctly individually when connected to the AS Rock PC. The DELL only has SATA connections on the MOBO. I created a HDD using Sysprep on the AS Rock system and that will not boot on the DELL.

Should I create another imaged HDD on the AS Rock System using Acronis and then boot it on the DELL unit?

Cheers

Nobody said anything about writing PAR to flash stick. Burn the ISO to CD, boot on new hardware to adjust Win7 to boot.
