Traveling overseas, trouble accessing websites

A friend, normally US-based, is traveling in Italy and is having some problems getting to the US-based web sites she needs.
For example, if she goes to a well known website like Netflix, (even if she clicks on the favorites bar or keeps writing www.netflix.com in,) it switches over to https://signup.netflix.com/global and won’t change back.
Has anyone had similar problems? Solutions?

Yeah, that is a problem - especially in the bigger European countries. You always get the local flavors. I have the same problem in Germany and France. It takes some searching and the use of different search engines (Bing, Google, etc.).

Sometimes the webpages themselves have the option to switch to a different country. Be on the lookout for that.

Thank you, whs. Here's another example my friend just sent me::

www.match.com comes up http://it.match.com/
"Even when I manually change it, it comes up again. I called them before I left and they said type in http://us.match.com I tried that but it switches back to the former."

Apparently this poses a problem sonetimes because you can't get to the information you need. Someone mentioned the possibility of changing dns numbers (??) so the computer thinks it is in US. But I don't know if that might create unanticipated issues.

That may be a possibility - if you work via a proxy internet id that is US based. I have never tried that, but theoretically that should work.

We have discovered what may be a fix:
Include the 3 w's when keying in the URL. For example, type in www.us.match.com rather than http://us.match.com. That seems to have solved the problem.
Hope this helps others.
