Hello,
A quick question of opinion. Is UPS Manufacturer Tripp-lite worth $20 over a comparible APC?
Thanks, the APC which is normally around the same price is on sale for $20 off until Saturday. Wouldn't mind saving $20.
Thanks for any opinion, experience or knowledge.

APC is pretty much the top and most respected brand of UPS on the market. If it was $20 cheaper, and all features were the same, I wouldn't hesitate one second to get the APC.

I buy APC over Tripp-Lite myself. I've owned a few Tripp-Lites myself and they have been fine..but I bought them to save money. With all of the businesses that I have been involved with over the year, and multiple data centers...you always see APC.

I personally like APC better as well, and use two APC Back-UPS XS 1500 units. I would say to compare the features and ratings, and if it's close, go with APC.

Hello to all and thanks for the quick response.
The difference is 330 joules instead of 420. Says it will power for 43 minutes, which is longer than I've recall on TL's. 3 year guarantee. Some thousands of dollars protection on your equipment. It is 330 Watt, over I believe 300 watts. So please continue or review or ask any questions.
Again appreciate your time.
There doesn't seem to be a rating for how clean it keeps output voltage or how quickly it reacts to changes. Or am I just not looking?

Gentlemen,
I've added some specs. The one on the left is APC and the one on the right is TL.
APC is 39.99 and Tripp-Lite is $59.99.
Areas that concern me, in my limited experience is that the APC say it outputs simulated sine wave, while the TL output is Sine Wave. The absence of a direct line for line comparison is also displeasing.

Anyway, thought this might give you a better idea.

I believe the APC on the left is one of the two I have at home. It is currently running my cable modem, router, and Windows Home Server box without issue.

Losing mind. Sorry to trouble you all with incorrect information. The $39.99 UPS is NOT an APC, it is a CYBERPOWER. The data specs are the correct ones though.
Sorry.
glennc

BTW is there a tutorial on UPS. Seems a lot of different info running around. The outside of the box on the Cyberpower said 47 minutes power, while the specification says less than 3 minutes. No wonder I've lost it.

Found my mind and I wasn't as nuts as I thought. Compusa advertised a CyberPower UPS that was 275 Watt for $39. No APC for less than $59.99. I went to the local store and sure enough they had a 550 Watt APC for $20 off. It was $39 and I was right about it being APC. Needless to say I purchased it immediately as there were markedly less boxes than when I was there last, plus tomorrow is the last day of the sale. Has DSL protection. I ran the monitor and PC to it's battery side and a surge protector to all the other devices, off the surge protected side. Box says I have 43 minutes of runtime. The software installed seems to indicate that I have 12 minutes. I set it to shutdown the PC when I have 6 minutes left. Guess that is safe enough.
Thanks for the help on APC quality and I think I'm good to go, until I get the whole house surge protected. I ohmed the ground rod to the ground wire and it was 00.2 ohms and to an inside outlet through a long wire and got about 1 ohm. Very cheap meter. Ground and wiring polarity checker indicate my outlets are o.k..
You guys have helped again,
Thanks

Hello Brink,
I wouldn't have, except for the recommendations I acquired from this forum's members and yourself. I wanted one of quality and it seemed to come down to the Tripp-Lite and the APC. I lucked onto the APC and ran with it.
I updated the software to Windows 7 version and it appears to have disabled Windows 7 UPS software and installed its own. When it is set to shutdown 6 minutes before the UPS looses power, does it do an orderly shutdown without supervision?
By that I mean does it close open programs and then do a Windows 7 shutdown?
In any case thank you and the members who kindly offered their opinions.

Cool, Brink. Just what I wanted. Tanx for the confirmation of my impression. I do feel better, after a night powering up, I'm up to 24 minutes of Battery runtime, so its getting better.
Take care. Nice place BTW
