I cannot seem to ahead on all this. I had to restart computer because there was an update and now it shows the update failed. I am sure this belongs in another section but I have attached a snip anyway. Can I proceed with TFC etc without addressing this first?

Hello!

Once Jacee has given you the all-clear (and only once she has) then try those updates again, one at a time << crucial - usually is one update in a group fails, then they all fail, with only a few exceptions. See if they still fail. If they both succeed, then great, but if one or both of them still fail, tell me, which one(s), and if you see an error code, tell me that as well, otherwise I shall grab some logs :)

I am qualified enough for this!

Jacee -
That is good to hear - when I read it I got the impression people experienced problems after removing that one. TFC ran well and I will do the full MBam now.

Thanks!

Hello Richard!

I went to install the updates separately and only 1 of the 2 that failed were available.

*Silverlight - updated without issue.
*Windows Live Essentials 2011 (shows failed from yesterday and no longer available as an update. I will say this, my Windows Live definitely looks updated - it is totally different - looking more like Outlook - many more functions available.

Does it show up as failed because it was done together like you mention above? If this weren't such an obvious update, how would you know?

I also did an optional update on the wireless (actually searched to make sure it was 'mine' before downloading it) - you good folks are teaching me well - :)!

In the process of checking on the updates, I reviewed the Security settings and noticed Defender was turned OFF - I have turned it ON. Should it be off with Trend Micro running? or did the brilliant minds setting up the computer simply do that for better performance?

As always, thanks!

Hello to you, too!

Great!

Have you checked the history again. They sometimes do some odd re-tries and stuff - and sometimes an update requiring a restart can mess slightly with the failures like this.

If it appears to have upgraded, and nothing is having any problems, then don't fix what ain't broke would be my advice :p

Does it show up as failed because it was done together like you mention above? If this weren't such an obvious update, how would you know?

Not because it was done together. Silverlight failed because it was done together, Live Essentials failed for other reasons, but a failure can mean many things, some not nearly as bad as others.

I also did an optional update on the wireless (actually searched to make sure it was 'mine' before downloading it) - you good folks are teaching me well - :)!

Fine. Well done!

In the process of checking on the updates, I reviewed the Security settings and noticed Defender was turned OFF - I have turned it ON. Should it be off with Trend Micro running? or did the brilliant minds setting up the computer simply do that for better performance?

Leave it on. See if it switches off again. If it doesn't, then just leave it on. Defender should be fine with Trend Micro, but messes around with MSE a bit, but then again, MSE replaces and upgrades it, and so when MSE is installed, it is not required to be switched on.

As always, thanks!

You are always most welcome!

Defender on and ran a scan - all well!

I did check history, that was the only way I knew it 'failed'. But I like your philosophy - don't fix if not broken! I'll keep an eye on it, but the change did take place last night and it booted fine this morning.

As always, Thank you for helping me plow through it!

Hello!

Thank you for the +rep and kind words. Greatly appreciated. I actually rarely take that line, but sometimes it is best. The fix is in-exact. We would be trying a lot of things out, looking at logs, and generally making the issue out of nothing. It is like the Event Log. Sometimes technical people search through the event log, and let's say find five recurring errors. They then ask us about them. There is nothing wrong about this, but they are probably difficult, time consuming, inexact, and invasive to fix, and on a perfectly working computer, as a great generalisation, shouldn't be worried about. People can disagree, and I see their point of view, and agree with it, but sometimes not everything should be fixed. :geek:

Whether I am allowed to use the smilie called "Geek" after that is your decision!

Thank you for the extended explanation - it actually does help.

FYI - I am actually looking up terms/acrynoms as needed when reading doc's etc (BSOD caught me by surprise:eek:), but I am afraid the meaning of a Geek smilie will need to explained!
