Trouble connecting to XP wlan network

I have a new laptop with W 7 home premium and I cannot seem to connect to my existing home XP wlan (and therefore to the Internet). It might be because my router will not permit access to the wireless adapter on the new laptop or something else. How do I find out what the "numbers" are for the new adapter so I can enter them in the router?

The new laptop's adapter is N while my XP home network is G

**Is there a way to get the settings from the XP network onto a flash drive to automate the process?

is your wireless network encrypted if so you need to enter the wireless key on the laptop when you connect also you may wan to go into your wireless adapter properties and set it to G band to match your router as well as set it to the same wireless channel

Thank you for helping. I know my wpa password and entered it but it still will not work. It stays stuck at "Identifying ......."

I will work on the router but how do I set the N adapter on the new laptop to G? I went to its adapter properties but do not see how to set it to G or change its channel. (Am new to W7).

going by what you say, you could possible have a MAC clone issue. Check this, if your router has a difference control panel check for the MAC option.

Problem resolved. It was the MAC filter in my router. When I disabled the router's MAC filtering, the new laptop connected.

But, I want to restore MAC filtering in the router. How do I find my new laptop's adapter's MAC code in W 7?

Wooho so the the MAC thingies did it? simple wasn't it.

You can say that again. I even was able to retrieve the new adapter's MAC address after finding where W 7 hides it command prompt and using ipconfig /all just like in my old XP. Now I am a happy camper. I was starting to panic .......
