The two reasons why I joined this forum is to say WOW, this is a great tutorial! Fantastic that someone found out how to get rid of those dreadful Windows Update errors. Great work Tom!

You see, I am having troubles installing some updates (which also includes IE11) and I did run System Update Readiness Tool (V33) and got a list of 10 missing manifest files:

Unavailable repair files:

1)amd64_microsoft.vc90.mfcloc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_92995f253c01eddb.manifest

Now I’ve followed the tutorial to the letter, but for some strange reason I can’t find the third value/key in CanonicalData\Deployments described in step 13. I have the first 3 values, but the third value/key I can’t find for all 10 of them in CanonicalData\Deployments.

So, this means I now have a real problem because I can’t find out which patches I have to download in order to restore the 10 missing manifest files. I guess that is the reason why SURT can’t find them and why I am having troubles with my windows update. I really hope someone can help me with this and/or perhaps tell me which updates I should download for which files?

The third value of each number (beneath) is the one that can be used to search for the appropriate key in CanonicalData\Deployments. I only have to know the CatalogThumbprint value in order for me to know which KB article number I have to use.

I’ve written down all the values of the 10 missing manifest files:

Hi Hulkster,

Thanks for taking the time to join and say thanks, I'm glad you found it useful!

Great job trying to fix this yourself, but there are certain types of updates this technique won't work for and unfortunately Visual C++ updates are one of them. A friend of mine and I have compiled a list of C++ version numbers and their corresponding updates:

Visual C++ File Versions Table | niemiro's Website

KB956414 was one of the ones I found actually, but it looks like the link is dead now and I can't find a way of downloading the x64 update any more. Fortunately, I have copies of the manifests you need :) This will replace them:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

WOW, thank you so much for the kind words and these files and most of all for the plain and simple explanation (on what to do)! I really appreciate the time you take to help others and me. Most of all, because these error’s are not regular and will take your time, thus searching the files to help others.

The SFCFix script worked great! Here is the log:

When I saw the log I was happily surprised and so I ran System Update Readiness Tool (V33) again. After a long time I had a look at the log and only found one remaining manifest file missing:

Unavailable repair files:
winsxs\manifests\amd64_policy.9.0.microsoft.vc90.mfc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_3624aa14c1dce505.manifest

So I thought mmmmm and had a look at the zip file you gave me. I found out the file that is still unavailable isn’t included in the zipfile. I am missing 1 file of the 10 manifest files I am missing. The last additional file I would really appreciate to get is:

amd64_policy.9.0.microsoft.vc90.mfc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_3624aa14c1dce505.manifest

All the other manifest files are present and most of the errors are resolved by SURT!

I have Acronis, so thank god I can go back many backups. What I did was I restored my last backup, then run your script and then run the System Update Readiness Tool (V33) (as it where for the first time). It said it Found 1051 errors of which Fixed 990 errors. So I would very much like the last file, so the remaining errors can be fixed.:D

Oops, sorry for missing that file out! These problems really don't take me much time - I have a program to create these fixes for me based on the logs I input :) I must have deleted a line from the log or something. Here's the last file:

Hello Tom,

Thank you so much! You are my hero! I’ve restored the last backup of Acronis, then I copied the last file into the zipfile with the other 9 manifest files and ran the script. It now copied the 10 files back to my system dir. Here is the logfile of the script:

Then I ran the latest version of SURT V33 again and it now doesn’t give any missing manifest files or any other files for that matter anymore. I had a look at the bottom of the script and noticed it still says it found 1050 errors of which 990 errors are fixed. Shouldn’t it have to fix all the 1050 errors it found? The script is included in my post.

Here's the difference...
CSI Payload File Missing Total count: 112
Fixed: CSI Payload File Missing. Total count: 52

You have some work to do yet to replace missing system files.

Run CheckSUR again, and you'll get the listing in an easy-to-read format.

Then run SFC /SCANNOW, and post the CBS.log file resulting - this may show other files also needing replacement.

Yes, it seems that way.:( I’ve included both CheckSUR.log and CBS.log in this post. When I ran SFC /SCANNOW in the past, it wouldn’t get any further then 22% and then gave some sort of weird error. Now it goes all the way to 100% and then says:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Wow, this seems to be a bigger problem then I though.

the SFC list isn't too bad, the CheckSUR list is more concerning.

(Since we've drifted off-topic for this thread, I'm going to ask that we split this out into a new thread in the Updates & Activation section after I've posted this)
This should clear most of the SFC errors -

I've uploaded a file - hkraa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\hkraa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\hkraa
or
DIR E:\hkraa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\hkraa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

The run another CheckSUR and post the CheckSUR.log as well

Thank you Tom for these files! I printed your instructions and wanted to choice “Repair my Computer” but couldn’t find it when I choice F8 before booting into windows. Then I remembered I had to boot up my Windows 7 DVD and from there get into the command prompt. Maybe this is something that will help you with any further assistance you might give here on the forum. You have to use a Windows DVD in order to get to the “Repair my Computer” option.

I tried to use the xcopy command you gave me namely: XCOPY <drive>:\hkraa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h but for reason I got the error: “Cannot perform a cyclic copy”.

Now I know a bit of bat files etc, so I did it like this:

I went to the root of my system drive (E) and from there I used the command “xcopy e:\hkraa\*.* e:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h . The *.* as you well know stands for everything and so it will only copy the content of the DIR of hkaa and not the map itself.

After I ran the script I booted into normal mode and run SFC /SCANNOW again and unfornatately I again got the same error:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The CBS.log is included in this post.

Then I ran CheckSUR again and that logfile is also included in the post.

As you can see, there's no real difference.
This means that the files did not successfully copy over - which probably means that either you used the wrong drive letter, or did not extract the files to the right place.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

DIR C:\hkraa
DIR C:\Windows\winsxs\hk* /S

Post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Oeps, I messed things up when I look at these two commands.:o With the command you gave me, it seems that I have another map of hkraa inside the map hkraa and thus it copied the map hkraa inside C:\Windows\winsxs. I though I would prevent this with my XCOPY command, but I should have had C:\hkraa and not C:\hkraa\hkraa. I now have C:\hkraa with all the amd64 and x86 maps directly under them like so: C:\hkraa\amd64_microsoft.vc90.atl_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_9aefdaaa829eb818 and in it off course the files and in this case that is "ATL90.dll".

Pffffff, I am sorry for this stupid mistake of mine.:banghead: I will rerun the XCOPY command in the CMD console of the Repair environment and then post both the Cbs.log and Checksur.log files again.

Thank you for the instructions to make the CMD life easier. I have no problems (thank god) with copy pasting from or to the CMD console and I always run my CMD with Administrator permissions. It always says (from where I start CMD): “Administrator: C:\Windows\system32/cmd.exe”. I disabled that annoying UAC completely. I heard that Windows 10 will finally have the option to copy/paste from/to text right into/from the console with the combinations CTRL+C/CTRL+V. In current versions (as you very well know as "The Expert") you get a sign instead of the contend that you wanted to paste. I am looking forward to W10.

I am sorry this takes longer then expected due to my mistake.

Ok I’ve made sure that I copied your files correctly this time. I created a file called run.bat and tested that bat file on my C: drive first. The command in the bat file became this:

Code:
xcopy e:\hkraa e:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

pause
I’ve checked manually and it copied all the files to C:\Windows\winsxs. I ran SFC /Scannow again and it still gave me the error “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.”. After this I rebooted and ran Checksur again.

Included are both the Cbs.log and Checksur.log again. It has less errors now when I read the end of the Checksur.log. Only 21 now where it first was 60, so we are getting somewhere!

I'll see what I can do about posting a fix tonight - but it could be tomorrow.

I've uploaded a file - hkrab.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\hkrab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\hkrab
or
DIR E:\hkrab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\hkrab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

Also run CheckSUR again, and post the new CheckSUR.log file

Great! I’ve xcopied your files from hkrab into C:\Windows\winsxs again within the Repair environment. And booted into the Normal Mode Windows and ran sfc /scannow again and now I got these results:

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

So that looks great!:D Then I rebooted and ran Checksur and now it only found 2 errors. That is a big improvement.

Cbs.log + Checksur.log are included.

Additionally, I would like to mention that after the last repair round, I all of a sudden get BSOD's. I had 3 already now and now for the moment it now holds (so I can type this post). It happens all of a sudden, but mostly when I just boot my system and I get the following BSOD:

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

0x0000003B

I never had this BSOD before in my life and now I get these BSOD screens. I never have many BSOD's with my installation so I am surprised. Oops, I hope there hasn’t gone something wrong with the repairs. I can restore a Acronis backup without a problem and then I wouldn’t get them anymore, however; then I would have to do all the repairs again. I rather find out why I am getting these BSOD’s.

I've included my CBS.log file again that seems to have some error's in it. This is not the one I first posted. I deleted the one I posted in the previous post, so I can see what kind of error's it would give. It didn't create one when I rebooted, however when I got these BSOD's it created the CBS.log file again
