Trouble with folder thumbnails/customization (HELP!)

Hey there,

I have a problem with the way Win7 displays folders: my whole music collection consists of folders that contain the songs and the covers (sometimes there are more than 2-3 images next to the audio files).
By default, W7 completely messes the folders: I'd like to be able to select the "main" cover for each folder - but Windows won't let me. Instead of that, the display randomly selects 2 or more images for the thumbnail.

This is how I'd like each folder to look:
2.png

Instead, I get one like this:
1.png

I tried setting the Customize tab exactly like in XP, but - when I select the image - nothing happens. The thumbnail remains the same.

Please help me out - what do I have to do so that I can have all my folders like in the first image?
Thank you in advance for helping out.

Hi C05T1N,

You're not going to believe this.

After you chose the jpg you want, drop a random mp3 you have on to the folder.

It will change to the icon you selected.

Some how it refreshes the icon cache only when you place a new file into the folder.

clearly a bug.

Greetz.

edit. taking a mp3 out does the same thing. it forces a refresh. :-)

OK, that's good to know, but... it doesn't really do any good for my situation.
The folder continues to show multiple images in its thumbnail.

How can I force it to show only ONE? (I'll do the gimmick with the new file, but it's not enough :( )

Later edit: DAMN, it works! Nevermind what I said earlier, that's the solution.
Thanks a lot!

The drag-a-file solution works, but it's not exactly the proper way to do it. There must be a tweak that forces W7 to automatically refresh the thumbnail of a folders that just got its properties modified. Hell, if XP could do it, why won't 7?

Here's the contents of the folder. The screenshot of the folder thumbnail is in the first post (the second image).

Well it's not actually solved... solved would be if W7's refresh issue would get a fix.

yes, you're right, it's workaround.

MS will fix it in some patch I'm sure.

You could send them an email. No send info button for this one. :-)

Maybe if you log out log on, or reboot it will refresh. Maybe you can try that.

Meanwhile I'll go search the registry to see what I can find on the icon cache.

keep your eyes on this post, I'll post back

Another work around is to download a tag editor like MP3tag. This is a work around, but it works great. It also lets you batch a folder or just do individual files. Here is the site. :)

You can clean the thumbnail cache through Disk Cleanup but it doesn't seem to help the problem at hand.. I've just tried it.

EDIT: sorry.. you want the Icon Cache!, it's at 'C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\IconCache.db' but you'll need to take ownership to delete it, Then restart explorer. This seems to work here for me. :)

Hi,

My problem with the thumbnail cache is a little different. I tried all solutions given in this post but none helped.

The problem is as followed: In de Windows Explorer there are Libraries. One of the default libraries is called Music, in which I added 1 folder which contains all my music. Open a folder and you can choose to "Arrange by". So I like the Arrange by Album. In this view it makes thumbnails of the albums I have BUT, once I change a cover (with for example mp3tag.de) it doesn't update the thumbnail.

I tried removing the icon cache.db and removed all hidden folder.jpg and smallalbumart.jpg files, but didn't help. any other ideas for this? ccleaner thumbmail cache doesnt clean it either.

EDIT: Fixed it. Just use the Disk Clean Up in Windows 7 to remove the thumbnails. Still wondering where they are stored though.

Hiya. and sorry to revive old topic.

I've had a similar problem but instead of music files I have bulk picture files. After trying everything in this Thread nothing has changed except that after I deleted my Icon Cache a few folders changed to the icon I wanted and a few changed to Blank but with both I still can't change the image again and my Icon Cache is now gone (Should I replace it?)

Doesn't work. After assigning a folder picture in customization, 2 random images are shown in a fan for the folder picture, same as before. However, viewing from an "open" or "save as" box shows things correctly, but that's inconsistent because deleting Desktop.ini didn't change that. Adding another picture into the folder doesn't refresh Desktop.ini's customization. Instead it changes the 2nd image in the fan to be the new picture. Removing it then makes the 2nd picture yet another random picture. Using Windows 7 x64. Bug persists in both the 64 and 32-bit Explorer process. Any fix or Explorer alternatives that feature folder icon customization?
