Dear all,

I have seen today an issue where I am requesting your help. I have installed Truecrypt on a brand new laptop with a certain password, I know that the password is good because I have type it twice. When I wanted to restart the computer it was requested for that password but it did not work. The laptop is HP and is running on windows7 professional. Any idea why is this happening?

Please help me with a root cause for this issue.

It sounds as if you performed a full system encryption instead of individual folders or volumes? If its the latter, See if this helps:

Yes it was a full system. I will try it tomorrow. If is not working what else can I do?

If you used some symbols within the password, check that the keyboard layout at startup (before Windows loads) may be different of that you use normally when inside the OS, so the keys may not produce the normal characters you expect.

I would try the password carefully again - if you can't get it to work, then I'm afraid there is no other choice but to wipe the disk and re-install everything again.

I forgot my password – is there any way ('backdoor') to recover the files from my TrueCrypt volume?

We have not implemented any 'backdoor' in TrueCrypt (and will never implement any even if asked to do so by a government agency), because it would defeat the purpose of the software. TrueCrypt does not allow decryption of data without knowing the correct password or key. We cannot recover your data because we do not know and cannot determine the password you chose or the key you generated using TrueCrypt. The only way to recover your files is to try to "crack" the password or the key, but it could take thousands or millions of years (depending on the length and quality of the password or keyfiles, on the software/hardware performance, algorithms, and other factors). If you find this hard to believe, consider the fact that even the FBI was not able to decrypt a TrueCrypt volume after a year of trying.
