I can’t run the Component services, Computer Mgmt, event viewer, Local Security Policy, task scheduler, Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, Windows PowerShell Modules from Administrative tools, because it requires MMC-Microsoft Mgmt Console, which doesn’t work anymore. I can’t run them from the start menu either.

Data Sources, iSCSI Initiator, Performance Monitor, Print Mgmt, Services, System Configuration, Windows Memory diagnostic work.

I’m not sure when this problem started. The same problems exist when logged in as Administrator.

Microsoft Management console has stopped working.

-Ran system file checker: sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
System File Checker said Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.

I ran Malwarebytes and Avast Anti-virus. It didn’t find anything major.

Scanned Boot disk for viruses using rescue boot CDs:
-BitDefender Rescue CD 2010
-Avira AntiVir Rescue System
-Kaspersky Rescue CD 2010

It found some threats for already quarantines files, some threats in old emails on boot disk-not location of current email directory on D drive, some in temporary internet files, deleted some java files.

I’m reluctant to do a repair install to fix windows 7 to potentially make things worse, have to re-install device drivers, etc.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit SP1, retail version. I upgraded from Windows Vista Ultimate retail version in April 2011.

My PC hardware (Feb 2009):
1) Motherboard: Asus P5Q Socket LGA775
2) Intel Quad Core Q9450 2.66 GHz CPUs
3) 4 GB DDR2 PC6400 dual channel memory - 2 x 2GB DIMMs (3.25GB usable)
4) Hard disk-Seagate ST3500320AS 500 GB SATA 7200 rpm 32 MB cache, 3 yr warranty boot
5) Hard disk-Seagate ST31500341AS 1500 GB SATA 7200 rpm 32 MB cache x 2, 3 yr warranty (first one is for data, second one is for backup)
6) LG GH22NS30 SATA 22x/22XDVD-RW burner
7) Video card-Zotac 9600GT amp 512 PCEI

I ran a new SFC scan in a command prompt Run as administrator
sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails2.txt
That worked. I've attached the log file showing the errors.

Did you run the SFC 3 times as suggested?

   Note
If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 or more times to completely fix everything that it's able to.

See if you can access them through Safe Mode

If so, try to perform a clean start to see if an application is interfering

If you navigate to C:\windows\System32\mmc.exe , and click on it...what happens? Nothing? An error is generated? I would be recommending a repair install if you did not specifically say you'd rather not do one (and make it easy ;))

The sound service wouldn't start later either. My hard disk started failing (bad boot sectors) and likely caused the OS corruption. I finally got a new same size boot disk and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7. All those problems are thus resolved.

Good to hear it. Eventually there are diminishing returns in fixing problems when the underlying foundation is damaged. A Guy
