Hi everybody,

I have two physical drives unpartitioned. First (250GB) where I have XP installed and second (20GB) where I had XP installed. I decided to install Windows 7 at the second drive (20GB) and keep the first drive with XP so that I can dual boot.

After installing Windows 7 at the second drive (C:) the dual boot screen disappeared.

When I log in Windows 7, I can see the XP as a drive with letter D: but I cannot boot XP.

How can I dual boot XP and Windows 7

Thanks beforehands.

Check in Disk Management while booted into 7 - see if D is listed as "System, Active".

If so, open an administrator command prompt, and type : (press enter after each line)

bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Windows XP"
bcdedit /set {ntldr} device boot
bcdedit /set {ntldr} path ntldr
bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast

I did everything successfully but when I press "Windows XP" at dual boot screen, I get a message "The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt" or something like that. I also get "Insert Windows installation disk and press Repair Computer". So I boot from Windows 7 DVD and when I press "Repair Computer" I can find olny Windows 7 OS.

Is the XP partition marked ACTIVE when you look in Disk Management?

Is XP actually on that partition?

If your 7 partition is marked ACTIVE - then it seems you have overwritten the XP boot files.

The easiest way to replace those is with EasyBCD 2.0 Beta Builds - The NeoSmart Forums

A picture of the Disk Management screen is usually very helpful if you can attach one.

It looks like you installed Win 7 with the 20 G drive being primary. By doing it that way the install did not see the XP install and did not set up a dual boot situation. The EasyBCD suggested is the easiest way to fix the problem.

By the way, C was not active. I made it active before running command prompt.

It seems the XP boot files were on C - not now as you installed 7 on it.

Easybcd 2.0 is the way to go . Download and install it on 7. Click Add/Remove Entries, select Windows 2k/NT/XP/2K3 in the drop down ( drive letter will auto configure to C )

Click Add entry - let Easy auto configure.
