trying to get surround to work (PS3 headset)

A friend at work gave me his wireless 5.1 surround headset from his PS3 (model # CECHYA-0080). I got them to work in stereo. Is there a way to get surround to work?

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I'm using it for my PC. He gave me the headset for nothing so I wanted to see if I could get it to work. According to the manual, surround only works if the wireless receiver is connected to a PS3. Just curious if someone knew of a hack to make it work.

Sounds like it was done on the PS3's receiver side with software and so for the pc it's only the stereo you can get unless your pc's soundcard can do virtual surround.

I don't see anything in my motherboard manual about virtual surround.

With good stereo headphones that onboard audio should be fine in stereo as the surround is gimmicky and usually crap anyways IMO. That board uses Creative Core3d as its sound chip so I don't think it was made for virtual surround but good stereo sound.

I agree with want rvcjew is telling you. The Virtual Surround sound is simulated within the PS3. The Headset has a switch which turns this feature on or off. I know that particular model sounds like crap if the surround is not turned on, at lease while gaming with the PS3.

Using the Sony PS3 Headset on your PC should work fine in stereo mode, there are audio settings you can tweak to make the sound better... depending on what your listening too.

Click on the speaker next to the Time>Mixer>Speakers>Set to Stereo>Device>Enhancements Tab>Place a tick on Bass Management> Advanced Tab>Select Sample Rate, this Headset may work best if sample rate is set to 16bit, 48000 Hz. But, you should test the different sample rates.

In the Control Panel select Realtek HD Sound Manager, once opened right click on it's icon on the Taskbar and pin it there. Work through the setting there. Make sure speaker configuration is set to 2/2.1 Speaker. Down at the bottom of this window there is an option to tick Virtual Surround, but it will not work. Hover your mouse cursor over where it says Virtual Surround and you will get a popup window describing how it works. You can also add sound effects. Click on Sound Effects Tab - select Live, or one of the other preset modes. You can also click on the graphic EQ to set manually. This manual setting can be saved.
