i cant believe i cant make this work

followed every tut out there..
checked all allow options on Remote Settings..
added user "Everyone"..

my network is: modem->PC1->PC2

while attempting to connect, for 'computer' i tried using public IP, internal IP, computer name (even localhost)..
for 'user name' also tried several combinations, but mainly computername\user..

im using PC2(WinXP) to attempt connection to PC1(Win7)..

any thoughts?

Go to your modem settings and port forward port 3389 on both UDP and TCP on the host's private LAN IP. That should do it.

They're both connected to a switch correct? If not, they won't be able to connect since they don't share the same subnet so you won't be able to communicate with each other. A router with port forwarding will make this task pain free like what you wrote.

wait, what? u mean to tell me that i need to spend money on a router in order to get Windows Remote Desktop working on my Home Network?
does that also apply to connecting Home from Work?

there was no mention of Switches on the network topology i outlined in the OP..

n yes they DO share the same subnet which is 255.255.255.0..

I see used Linksys 4 port wired routers in the Thrift Stores here for $ 4.99 to $ 9.99. That is an inexpensive way to make a home wired network.

nvm, i figured it out, sorry..

it didnt occur to me to run netstat sooner because there was simply no reason to (or so i thought)..

turns out port 3390 was running instead of 3389..

for many minutes i had no idea how this came to be..
then i remembered that 3 or 4 years ago i used the invitation thing once..
i guess i mustav changed it then..
