Trying to install itunes

OK I need some serious troubleshooting help. I am running build 7100 of Windows 7 x64 RC.

My main music player on my old XP install was itunes, and I was hoping it would work here, but I can't seem to get it to install. I realize itunes isn't officially supported for Windows 7, but I know prople have gotten it to work, I just can't figure out how.

Last night, I downloaded and ran the 64-bit Vista installer, but instantly it gave me some error about not having Quicktime and that itunes needs it. I don't really understand the point of the error since the itunes installers are supposed to provide both. Anyway, I downloaded and installed Quicktime by itself. So now the itunes installer just says there were errors during installation, and no files were changed/installed. I've tried the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions. I've run the installer as administrator. I've run it in compatability mode and tried every possible previous Windows version it allowed. I get the same error every time.

Some things to note:
All of the itunes installers seem for itunes and Quicktime both, though I still have Quicktime installed on its own. I don't know if this matters or not. I haven't gotten any farther in the install process after installing standalone Quicktime, only the error has changed.

I have Windows 7 installed on its own partition, and have been installing all other programs to their own partition. Does it matter where itunes is installed? And does the install path have to include "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"? I've tried installing to the default path as well as with the rest of the programs on my E:\ drive, the error remains the same. I just want to eliminate any future issues if I get past the first second of installing.

heres what i do when im having problems with itunes .Download "windows installer cleanup"
get rid of itunes and quicktime
reinstall itunes and quicktime what come together then uninstall quicktime and install qt alternative

the last part isnt necessary but lighter version of quicktime

I just uninstalled standalone Quicktime and tried the itunes + Quicktime installers again, and it just goes back to "The installation of quicktime did not complete successfully. iTunes requires Quicktime." error. Windows installer cleanup doesn't help me here, but thanks anyway.

It almost seems like the Quicktime part of the installer doesn't inherit the combatibility/admin priv. settings when those are invoked before running the installer. Just a guess, but I could see something like that causing problems. It's also kind of dumb to have to run every other application as administrator when my user IS the friggin' administrator.

try cleaning ure registry with ccleaner when uninstalled everything then do a search for quicktime and delete any folders
look in program data see if theres quictime folder in there .Make sure youve got show hidden files enabled in folder options menu/- ive had this problem before and fixed it by doing this^

Does it work if you first download Safari for Windows along with the "Apple Software Update" program and download itunes + quicktime that way?

Well, I fixed it finally. I installed an older version of itunes which someone else said worked for them, 7.6 I believe. I was able to get a little further in the install, but I ran into the error where it looks for the .msi file unpacked by the installer in the Appdata\Local\Temp folder. It says it's not there, but it is, there's just a problem with "ownership" of the file. I had already downloaded a "hack" that allows you to take ownership of a file or folder via the right-click menu, so I just did that right after I started the installer. I was able to finish the install, and was even able to then upgrade to the latest itunes with this method.

This method also worked when trying to install Adobe Air, and will likely work for other pesky installs. I don't want to provide a link to the context menu "hack" here, but anyone who wants it can find it easy enough.

Seems like a lot of trouble in installing your itunes. Even though you say you have it installed, you could always try (if itunes is still listed in programs and features to be uninstalled) using Revo Uninstaller on Advanced to see if it will get rid of all itunes/quicktime entries. Reboot, re download your itunes, turn off any Antivirus program, right click - properties - unblock and see if it will properly install. Revo says it doesn't support 64 bit, but it still works in some cases on it, it has for me before.

Well, I just wanted to play it safe. Every forum has different rules, and some seem to think messing with the ownership thing can screw stuff up. Anyhoo...

I'm not gonna bother trying to Revo uninstall itunes at this point. I love that program, but itunes is, for all intents and purposes, installed just fine. I don't know if it's officially the 32 or 64 bit version, but meh. I appreciate your input, though.

It's ok, better safe than sorry. Itunes isn't true 64 bit, only the installer is.

So, I keep running into this issue (the error message saying file not found) when installing programs that put temp files in "...Appdata\Local\Temp". I have to select all of the new files the installers put there and "Take Ownership" before it gets the chance to throw the error. There has to be a more permanent resolution for this. Any ideas?
