the power supply industry is not to forthcoming on what's what they are just try to sell units anyway they can it does not matter if you have 18 +12 volt rails if they are only low amperage you need enough watts yes but also a single +12 volt rail that can deliver enough amps to power everything demanding power from it all the watts in the world won't help if theres no amps there

Very true.

On top of that, the fact:
Manufacturer A says : 550W (meaning Peak wattage 550 continuous: 400W)
Manufacturer B says : 550W (meaning Peak wattage 700 continuous: 550W)

its not always clear and is a big difference :(

i did the minimum power supply link, it reccomended 695 for me. and i have 750. Should i go bigger?

yes you need more headroom in your PSU I would recommend something more powerful and try for a branded recommended type such as corsair or thermaltake.

I suggest take a few minutes reading through this article.

I also suggest your try the ram checks and setup I suggested here ;)

Well that is just what the specs say for the ram. I havent touched anything in bios because of the instability. I will give it a try after the new power supply comes in.

i did mem test and it went horrible. i tested each stick individually at 9-9-9-20 at 1.7 v and went perfect for 3 of them 3 passes per. and 1 stick had a couple errors. dropped down to 3 sticks and it is more stable. i played bioshock for 1 hour before any problems. oc'd proccesor at 3.8 ghz. Wonder if i need different ram. Going to run memtest overnight on the 6 sticks. see how many errors i get then. only did one successful pass last time. I am using ocz3g1333LV4GK

if you are overclocking this opens up a whole other realm settings become very crucial like I said up the voltage to the ram you may even need to bump CPU voltage to make everything stable but what I would recommend is putting everything at stock speeds and test your ram if all tests are good you know you just don't have the settings right for your overclock

I had a similar problem with my new build. I have an i5-750 with an HD 5058.

After a fresh instaill of W7 x64 I installed Fire Fox then AVG then Zone Alarm. Then I started chain crashing with the grey/green verticle lines, similar to a lot of people with 5850's.

As soon as I uninstalled Zone Alarm my system became stable again and I haven't crashed since. So I would say it is a conflict with other software/drivers you have installed.

I'd suggest a fresh install and testing your system for stability after each progam is installed. Hopefully! then it will be as simple for you to fix as it was for me.

RMA the RAM. If you can't pass memtest at stock settings, the RAM is bad. Keep the good kit, return the bad one.

Ok so i ran memtest last night for 9 hours with no errors. I guess one of the sticks was bad. But i am now running 6 gigs of the ocz3g1333l4gk at 1600 with 1.7v with 9-9-9-20 and 2t. No problems with 9 hours of memtest. The new power supply will be in today. But i do not see a need to put it in yet if the only problem i am having left is the stupid " ati driver has crashed and recovered error". That is annoying. i never oc'd my rig before because it was not stable enough for me to feel comfortable. Now that i have eliminated that error, i have my x4 965 running at 4.0 Ghz. idle at 27 degress and full load of 46 degrees. I have my hd 5850 clock at 850/1200 (orginally 750/1125) idle at 32 and full load of 50-60.Wondering if i should keep or return the power supply. i know the one i have is not the best but it is currently doing it job. The display driver error is so frustrating, i might check audio devices, that might be causing it to clash.
Because i can run furmark stability test with gpu at 100% at 57 degrees for 4 hours no display driver problems.

Hi, what monitor have you got, it is not mentioned in your specs?

Hi, this is just a simple way to see what is on your machine. At the Start Orb / Search, type into the box, SYS, click on the System Information at the top of the search Menu,

This will open up a page with some information on it. Take a picture of the page using the Snipping tool and post it up here.
I would just like to have a look at it,
Thanks.
